Pixel Art / Re: The Oregon Trail doodle, a "pixel Alchemy".

Saimo, thanks mate. I always just skim through that page and try not to wonder what a hassle it would be to search for all the compilers. :) I'm still a kind of layman in those spheres; still -- maybe it's the high time I should reconsider using some interlaced modes (this could even go as a sequence -- a minute's work for an average coder, I guess).

Feel free to choose any mode, but I suggest you avoid modes based on interlacing and/or screen flipping, as there's no escaping the resulting flicker (especially on emulators). Given your talent, I'd say you'd do great with MUFLI or any similar mode.

Helm, honestly I don't know if it makes sense to proof them for c64 specs, I wonder if there's any possible hi-res mode that would not "squarize" the piece too much. It would probably take some extreme programming.

There are several modes that might suit your piece - have at look at this great round-up.

Pixel Art / Re: 32*32 icons
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:36:05 am »

what about this? it would have looked a lot better with the outer AA but only on this background, and i really want them to also work on dark ones.

Breaking the outline doesn't solve the problem, unfortunately. If you need to paste the icon on multiple backgrounds, then the only really effective solution is adding an alphachannel and putting the outer AA there.

Hi,

since many here love the C64 (palette), I thought I'd better inform you that today I released the 2nd preview of HOC INIT EXIT, a toy game for the C64 I fiddle with in my spare time.

Check it out on CSDb and enjoy!

PS: By the way, who or what is Arne? I see alot of people around here that talk about "Arne's palette" and would like to see this palette for myself :)

Have a look at this topic ;)

Wonderful stuff.  :'( for joy, here.

Has this project anything to do with this one? A sequel, perhaps?

General Discussion / Re: Your choice of background color
« on: December 04, 2009, 11:59:07 am »
As important as an amateur's opinion can be, I'd say that, in general, mid gray is the "best" choice as it's the most neutral color available. And that's in fact what I start with (and usually also end with). However, I guess that the best color in absolute depends on what is being drawn and on the context (if any) it is supposed to be placed in. Ah, and I'm among those who said that working with very saturated and/or bright colors causes a deep pain in the eyes.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Jewels and game interface
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:10:23 pm »
I know at this point you'd prefer hearing something about the interface, but I've only got a few things to say about the jewels:
 * dithering isn't really suitable to depict shiny, smooth surfaces like those of jewels;
 * the bottom-right corner of the purple jewel suffers from flatness / dimensional clash due to bad shading;
 * maybe edges should be more reflective than the connected surface(s) (f.ex. the green one is OK in this respect, but the purple and the red ones aren't);
 * the red jewel lighting isn't consistent with the rest;
 * unless it's just my ignorance, lighting in general doesn't really convince me.

All of the above, IMHO.

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to inform those who might be interested that the developer's manual to create skins for BOH (which I presented in this earlier post) has been finished (it took longer than expected :P). It can be downloaded from the DOWNLOADS page of the website (direct link).
Have fun!

Pixel Art / Re: Grass and dirt tiles -- comments?
« on: August 05, 2009, 08:23:47 am »
Lendrick, I think you're doing a great job: your tiles look nice and different from usual :y:
A couple of things could be improved:
 * borders: the grass-dirt transition is too sharp (well, this is something that affects all the tilesets of this kind);
 * dirt: the grid, although not really evident, can be seen.

Keep up the good work!
