Pixel Art / Edgar Allan Poe CGA
« on: February 08, 2007, 10:41:35 am »
EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849);
worked from scratch, with help of a printed reference picture I found in a book.
CGA|320*200 gfx mode, should be viewed on full screen (rectangle pixels), preferably through a DOS-compatibile img viewer.

I haven't really liked CGA, I just couldn't buy it... until I saw some of the recent Lackley's works. Obviously, there were (and are) lots of interesting CGA pieces I liked (and like) before, but they just didn't push me to make my own, like Lackley's did.
It took me a few days of work, 1/2h daily, to learn why this guy loves the palette. I, too, fell in love with it and I'm quite happy with the effect (which doesn't happen often). Thank you!

If you like it, please leave a comment; if you don't, critique is also welcome*! :)

*though I consider it finished

Pixel Art / [wip?, update II] Five Dollar Silicon Presley
« on: December 29, 2006, 10:49:44 pm »
Hello!

Here is my lastest work, still at an early stage of progress. It was insprired by some cyberpunk/demoscene/helm stuff I've been watching lately. ProMotion + a shitload of coffee/cigarettes.

When finished, it's mean to be used as an 128x128 avatar. I just went tired of that fad thing. :)

Update I, 1. o1. 2oo7:

Update II, 5. o1. 2oo7:

Progress:

If you look closer... yea, you're right - this's another work made with the famous Turbo's palette! but before putting it in the PCH2 official thread, I'd like to hear some crits from you, guys.

I'm especially interested in:

* the shape/placement/general shading of an ear (I hardly ever draw them; here it's also a matter of perspective, I'm afraid)
* highlighting (not fully keen on it, I aim for something... clearer and eye-catching)
* lighting in overall (his right temple - should be lighted more? it's a metal structure)
* ?

So... what do you think? Be as harsh as you like but please don't give a damn! ;)

Thanks!

Pixel Art / "Secrets of the Acropolis", a GameBoy mock-up
« on: November 01, 2006, 02:48:26 pm »
Hi!

Though I`ve seen lots of hoaxes based upon the GameBoy restrictions lately on Pixelation, I decided to put here my own, which is, in fact, my first completed "serious" piece. I was working on it since June, but actually, it were a few days of MS Paint work stretched in time.

Four different "LCD shades" palette taken from the "NO$GMB" GameBoy emulator.

(These oval thingies meant to be olives.)

"SECRETS OF THE ACROPOLIS" for GameBoy Classic
(a game screen mock-up, v. 2.766*)
THE SHORT STORY:

"Once upon a time, long, long ago, when there were no such things like the television or a pixel, the city of Athens stood firm under the reign of Olympic gods.

And once upon that time, there was a quarrel in heavens. Somebody stole the never-ending goblet of ambrosia, which for eons had belonged to Dionysus, the god of wine! Everyone was accusing each other, shouting and shrieking louder than you can imagine! And at last, Zeus, the god of all gods, went really furious! "Enough! Enough, my dears! You are acting worse than children" - he yelled over them, while throwing thunders down the shaking earth.

And after the noise calmed down and poor Dionysus gathered his wits, it has been decided, that one of the younger satyrs, [name], will be send out of the Olympus to look over the whole thing. There was only one trail left by the thief and it led to the dark realm of Hades, ruled by the wicked lord of the dead, where only souls can reside.

Once there was a gossip about a passage under the Acropolis hill…"

Maybe it`s too much as for a single small piece, but it was fun to write a story like that. Someday I will return to the theme, for sure - there are "Legends--" and "Ruins of the Acropolis" mock-ups for different systems planned in the near future. :)

Okay, enough talking. What do you guys think of it? Please C&C. Thanks!

* There were plenty of changes during that long period, since I haven`t started from a sketch and was working on it by heart.
