General Discussion / Need some other people's opinions
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:17:00 pm »
Since you're all artists here, I figured you might be good to ask, although I'm not sure if this is really supposed to be in General Discussion or on this forum at all, but I don't know, there might be something to learn from it.

I co-run a website for general entertainment, and one of our newer contributors submitted this-

Along with the description-

Quote
This is a piece I made in art rage using the paint brush options right after the Yoshi's Island Super Replay final episode. It took me about a week to make, and I'm still not satisfied with how "mushy" everything looks, but I feel it's still worth showing off.

Now, anyone who knows how to scale an image probably knows what interpolation looks like, and long story short it's just this-

-scaled and filtered.

But he insists that he used it as a guide and painted over it. I didn't buy this for a second, but the problem is that I'm not comfortable taking action until I'm 100% sure that he's not being honest, and right now I'm sitting at somewhere around 99%. So if any of you can just confirm that it's scaled and filtered and not painted over (if it seems ambiguous, look at the angles that the scaled verison makes, especially noticeable on the large spikes), then I think that'll be enough.

Pixel Art / 16 Bit Characters
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:17:03 am »
Been a while since I made my own thread, now that I think about it. I guess I haven't been doing much myself.

Until now. *dramatic percussion. I'm working with some people on a fan prequel for the cult "classic" Overblood (if you're familiar with Game Informer you might know of when they played through it and the community that came out of it, which is why this exists) and we've decided to go all meta and make it one generation back, which would be the 16 bit era.

I'm pretty out of practice, but I did some quick things to work out a base, referenced off FF6, trying to shake off a bit of rust before the real work kicks in. I figured it would be good to come here and take care of any issues early, so here's a few. And sorry it's more RPG style characters. At least it's not a tree.

Progression of the main character-

Another person-

And the other main character, a robot-

Now, the black outlines and exaggerated bits are there to keep SNES charm, and if there's anything else that looks like it might exist for the same reason, chances are it's not. So have at it, I guess.

Also, the grey I'm using as a background is close to what everything will be on in game. Just in case someone was wondering.

Pixel Art / Logo for a documentary
« on: December 23, 2011, 10:38:02 pm »
Alright, I'm working on this for an internet acquaintance, and I'm pretty happy with it, but I feel like there are tons of things that could either be fixed or improved. So I figured I'd come ask you guys with all the creative juices.

It's supposed to be very simple, and have a 8/16 bit theme going on, so I want to avoid too much AA to keep it very crisp and pixely.

Basically, if you were going to take this and give it to someone to use as a logo, what would fix, change, or add?

General Discussion / XP Paint for 7
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:12:00 am »
I recently upgraded computers, and Paint has always been the only way I've done pixel art, but as I'm sure most of you know, Windows 7's Paint is terrible. I've heard about several programs that are like XP's, but one of them is down and the others are basically GIMP, which I already have and prefer Paint to.

So, is there anything as simple and precise as XP Paint that I can use? Even user created programs are welcome.

Pixel Art / WIP Landscape, need some help
« on: July 17, 2011, 04:38:33 pm »
Well, I've started work on another project that will never get past pre-production, or maybe half a simple engine if I'm lucky, and I need this landscape thing. I made a quick paint over a while ago and I've been putting it off until recently, but naturally I'm stuck. Here it is-

Mine in the top left, reference to the right and dithering ref in the bottom left.

Now, this is one of many, many variations, mostly different palettes, and I think this one looks the best. But first, I've always sucked at dithering. It's been that one thing that I've never been able to get right. But I think I have the technique down now, I'm just not experienced enough to apply it well. Looking at the one mountain, I know it has basically no depth, and I'm pretty sure it's because I just made a straight gradient. So I'd like any kind of help from anyone more experienced, so hopefully I can get this down sometime. And obviously the sky was a failure. I'll get back to that later.

Also, this is my first big project in a REALLY long time, so I'm out of practice with larger-scale shading and textures.

Pixel Art / C&C on Samus
« on: March 15, 2011, 03:36:30 pm »
About two years ago someone on a different forum I frequent posted a challenge to color this lineart-

I started, and, because I frankly sucked at spriting back then, it turned out terrible and I stopped working on it. About a year after that, I discovered it again and started working on it some more. It was better, and I finished the entire thing, but then I saw it again recently. I edited or redid a whole lot, and ended up with this-

Now her (from her POV) right arm and shoulder, right upper leg, and left hand are untouched from the two year old original, because I want to keep them as a reference. I'm not using this sprite for anything other than practice, so it doesn't really get in the way or really matter that much. Anyway, I'm still learning so I'd like to hear (well, read) your opinions.

Also, the extra helmet is based on Prime, while the one that's attached is classic 2D style.

Pixel Art / I'm New, Looking for Feedback
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:42:27 pm »
I've always checked this site because of how awesome most of you guys are, but I've never thought of myself as good enough to post anything here. Then I decided "screw it, it'll help me improve if nothing else." So, I've been spriting and all that for about 5 years now and I feel like I've really started to get the hang of it.

And here's a link to more of my stuff-  http://z3.invisionfree.com/MP2D/index.php?showtopic=2314&st=0

Just look at the improvements-

Two years old:

Recent:

REALLY old:

Relatively new:

Also really old:

Pretty new:

Now, I realize that there are still lots of things I'm doing wrong or could improve on. That's mostly why I'm here, to learn and hopefully improve myself.
