I'm currently working on Westward, a multiplayer 2D online game where the players have to collaborate to conquer and settle a continent. Here is the link to a still very basic yet functional demo .

I seek the help of artist(s) to help define the artistic style of the game. At a high level, this would involve deciding between pixel art, "hand drawn" or other possible styles, and to try to find a "tone", a "vibe" that should be felt throughout all the visual assets. At a lower level, it would involve deciding how to express this vibe, deciding on how the buildings should look, the characters, the scenery, the battle system, the UI, and all other visual aspects of the game, working out the details, the colors, the scales, etc.

To be clear, I'm not looking for someone to make all the visual assets yet, I seek someone to make a few drafts to help decide how they should all eventually look! (But obviously, the person(s)
helping me at this stage would be first on the list for making them down the line.)

In practice, I'd like to collaborate with someone to make two or three template pictures which would feature several different elements of the game. A kind of style palette representing samples of game elements in the chose style. For example, a scene representing a few characters and buildings together, another scene representing a battle as it may look like in the game, another one representing some menus, etc. Fake screenshots if you will. We could iterate on these templates until we converge to a nice, distinctive and coherent style for all game elements.

These templates could in turn guide the creation of all the actual, final assets when the time comes. They could also be used to express what the game will be about and will look like, long before the demo reaches that point.

I have already started collaborating with an artist on some assets, but I'm eager to collaborate with multiple persons in parallel on this, to explore different styles and find exactly what I'm looking for.

Btw, if what I'm asking has a specific name, I'd love to know it!

The development is going well, but the demo is starting to outgrow the placeholder assets I've been using so far. I'm hoping to find someone who would be interested by the project and willing to contribute to it by making a small amount of pixel art.

More specifically, I'd be interested in sprites of buildings to use in the game (5 images would be sufficient for the moment, more or less 500x500, much more precise details will be provided if interested). The demo features a few buildings already but they do not correspond at all to what I need.

I have in mind something in the same vein as the buildings in Moonlighter (see below) but I'm very open and interested in discussing the art direction with the artist and leaving considerable freedom.

There is no hard deadline as the game is still far from completion and I'm asking free stuff anyway. Therefore the time horizon can be discussed.

Full credit will be given on the website of the game and in the credits section of the game itself.

I'd like to present Ensemble, an experiment in crowd design, where players, developers and artists can collaborate to collectively design a browser-based multiplayer online game. This is a very experimental project to see what can emerge from pushing the collaborative aspect of a project to the max.

This project is collaborative in the sense that it is the community, and the community only, who decides how the game should evolve. Copied from the page of the game, here is a short description of two of the main channels for this process, the most relevant ones for this community:
  • Suggesting and voting for features. Anyone can make suggestions about a feature to add to the game (with a simple embedded form, without the need to login or anything, no friction). A list of the suggested features (located below the game canvas) allows to vote for or against each of them. On a regular basis, one of the top-ranked features of the moment is selected and implemented.
  • Submitting art. A form is provided to enable artists to send artwork that they would like to see added to the game, such as sprites or animations. For these as well, submissions are accepted unconditionally.

At the moment, the "game" consists in moving colored dots around, and dropping white blocks that serve as obstacles. This is still very basic, as only a handful of features have been suggested and implemented yet. You are free to jump in and attempt to shape the evolution of the game!

The below picture shows the appearance of the game at the moment. Obviously there is plenty of room for improvement.

I'm sharing this here, as I think artists interested in game development might be interested in contributing to an ongoing project with their own art, and possibly experiment as well through this medium. Features suggestions are also welcome, especially from a different community than usual (artists rather than programmers).
