Pixel Art / 3 Frame Sprites?
« on: December 09, 2017, 02:47:21 am »

Using DawnBringer's lovely 32 color palette.

Thinking about starting another project, either RPGMaker or C++\SDL.

4 legged animal sprites are tough with 3 frames.  I'm not sure what to do about the walk down\up animation.  If I add side to side movement it looks crazy, same with making it bounce up and down.  But it looks super static and boring, or like she's making biscuits instead of walking.  I don't really want to make the tail swish.  One thought was bobbing the head....

The side movement I am more or less satisfied with.

Pixel Art / Working on a sidescroller
« on: March 16, 2014, 06:22:58 am »

Edit: Vertically cropped image, removed second image, mostly placeholder art.

So, specifically, I am working on the backdrop right now.

I'm working on a platformer\rpg, starting to try to clean up the tileset and add a background to the first level.  The only thing in this that I did not draw is the main character sprite, a guy on the SomethingAwful forums drew it for me a while back.

So, I'm drawing assets to the best of my capability, I feel like I'm getting better and maybe someday it will evolve beyond "programmer art"  :)
For this, I do want to keep a boxy, simple, relatively flat look, realistically that's the extent of my ability and it would look worse if I tried to overwork it to make it look better.

I'm stuck on outlining.  The first screenshot, should I outline all the trees, and both layers of background foliage?
I'm leaning towards yes, outlining the trees, but the trees in the second row outline with warmer, less contrasty color.  The foliage nor background ground I can't decide.

Is there any rule of thumb that should be applied here?  I don't want the background to be distracting, at all, but I also don't want for it to look washed out or like I'm afraid of contrast or saturation, because that look is no good either.

Pixel Art / Trying to get into Pixel Art - Sprite and a couple tiles
« on: September 06, 2008, 02:25:08 pm »

I've been doing pixel art on and off for a while.  I don't have a whole lot of artistic talent.  I made this by drawing a blob and removing from it, and copy/paste flipping the image back and forth until it looked somewhat human, and then just added colors to try and give it a little depth.  I spent like 6+ hours on it.   :-[

It still needs work.  Maybe more frames, more colors?   I had to bring the legs closer together to make it animate right at all.  If I make the arms move too much, it looks really bad, but the arms don't quite look right as is right now.  Do i _NEED_ more frames?

Any ideas?

Also working on a couple tiles, less than done, but am I heading in the right direction?

I need to make the grass tile a bit better, and fix the wall a bit.

This is for a game in Java I'm writing.   Admittedly, drawing is more fun than the code.
