I have a problem, and while its not as interesting as a flesh eating skin disease its come close to being just as annoying. I am a programmer, game designer, and web admin, but to my dismay, not an artist. As much as it wish I was, visual art is just not a talent of mine. I have found it difficult if not impossible to improve said skill to any great degree.

I am planning to bring to fruition a few small game concepts for commercial use. Obviously I need art for these projects, but the time frame and budget associated with such a small project do not lend themselves to me hiring an artist. This has forced me to do the art myself. While I have some experience in pixel art I have never been happy with what I produce.

My solution to my problem is to find a simple form of stylization for the art which would allow me to produce all the art needed for my projects myself. The style needs to be simple yet professional looking and usable in either top-down or side perspectives. While I am not a great artist I do have some skill. I will gladly lend an ear to anyone with an idea. Thank you.

[EDIT]: I should also note I am looking for something other than geometrical line art which is not professional (in this day and age) and been done to death anyhow.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Weird Space Magic Hair Guy...thing..... o.0
« on: January 09, 2008, 07:05:50 pm »
When I started this piece was trying to do some kind of abstract new age shape thing...but I ended up giving him a (semi) normal body. Hes dressed in what looks like a space age fashion trend of the future, I guess. And for some reason he is magical.... umm yeah... :P....I am currently hating the hand with a passion, any suggestions would help. I tried layering the spell effect over the hand, but it became unrecognizable/blurry at normal viewing size. Not sure what to do with the hair or face either.  :-\

Small Edit: (Bah now I cant decide which one)

More edits:

 1/10/08 --------  1/11/08 (Latest)

Final:

I mostly just want comments/suggestions on those three parts, but feel free to critique anything in the piece most harshly as it is the only way I will improve.

If it were not for a few nice commenters a few weeks ago I would still be drawing things like this ->

Makes me want to gag....

Pixel Art / Blue the blob
« on: December 29, 2007, 01:46:57 am »
Here is my new avatar, its my second animated pixel ever (and my 15th or so pixel art ever), this one being 100 times more complex than my last one. Got bored at the end and kind of finished it really fast, but I am pretty happy with it just the same. Might add a few more frames to the end so it doesn't stop jiggling all of a sudden, but for the most part I am done.

Here are a few WIP:

and the final:

C+C appreciated.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Soldier (Show me how to proceed)
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:48:58 pm »
Alright then, I am unsure how to proceed in shading/coloring this. Don't critique the line art it is fine for my purpose (practicing shading/coloring). Could someone tell me what I am doing right/wrong or whatever as well as how to proceed in finishing him. Also, if someone could actually SHOW me how THEY would do it with the colors provided I think that would be very helpful. Thanks a bunch  :)

Update (2\1\08):

I think I am getting the hang of it, not quite right, but here is my next stab at it.

Pixel Art / Programmer Art....lol
« on: December 26, 2007, 11:05:35 pm »
First post!!  :o

My trade is programming, but I have wanted to try my hand at pixel art for a while now. I have no art background or formal education in the area. Tried a few times last year, but I gave up. Anyway, my enthusiasm was recently reborn and I found this forum while searching for tutorials.

I need some well deserved critique on all the art I've "finished" so far. What have I done wrong, and more importantly what have I done right.

Messing around and trying to create a shield. Each row is a new try and I think I got it right on the 3rd for the small shield. I decided to try my hand at a larger version.

Little walking elf animation I did for fun:

Ship I did when I got into pixeling the first time:

Anyway, commence the critiquing, TAKE COVER!
