Pixel Art / The quest of the Runcycle
« on: September 16, 2014, 11:46:58 am »
Hi guys,
So this year I decided to build myself a solid portfolio with a lot of different things including animation, I've never been much of an animator and the generic runcycle animation is, I think, a good place to start. It's pretty hard tho.

I've tried several times using different approaches.
2 years ago I started working on a quite "technical approach"

It didn't quite work since I'm not a patient person and there are better ways to achieve this kind of works (like puppet animation).

This year I used a different approach, drawing directly each frame of a very simple character at a smaller resolution, with less frames. I felt it was much easier that way and errors are more forgiving.

I think it works, it was a bit faster before I convert it to gif format for some reason. I din't bother much about timing tho, might lack a bit of punch.

from that base, i tried to animated a bigger character. I simply doubled the resolution to draw over each frame.

Actually I think it sucks. The movement is wonky, messy. I think the cause of this, now that I look closer, is that she doesn't step up from the ground. There should be 1 frame or 2 where the character jumps off the ground and her feet doesn't touch the ground.

Yesterday I started a new one using the same process (took the small guy as a base) and I came to something way more satisfying.

Well, so I corrected most of the errors I found in the knight one and the movement is way more punchy and clear (also clean pixelling and bright colors does help readability). I played a bit around timing, it might not be 100% accurate with my original psd file but I think It looks alright.

There might be a few anatomical issues, like legs being shorter/longer on certain frames or weird poses but once animated it doesn't seem to matter much. Tell me if you spot anything obvious

I think I'm on the right track with that one, I will continue working on it. Maybe give him a proper head someday and play around other animations like idle, jump, shoot, attack, run with gun in hands, etc.

Any feedback / head design proposition is highly appreciated, thanks for reading  ;D

2D & 3D / Printmaking and related techniques
« on: December 13, 2012, 08:47:01 pm »
Hey guys ! For the last few years I dropped out pixel art and got more interested in traditionnal art, that's how I discovered linocut. Linocut is a way of creating and printing images by carving a block of linoleum and use it as a tampon to print your image on a piece of paper.
You may ask "Why talk about this on a pixel art forum ?". Because IT IS Low spec ! Maybe not the way you define it but this media does have technical restrisctions and the biggest is : COLOR LIMITATIONS YAY !
Yes, in linocut you have to deal with limited color count, just as in pixel art.

Here are some of my stuff :

2 colors

3 colors

4 colors

In the last set of print, I worked with 4 colors (so 4 carved lino blocks) but as you can see, there are more than 4 colors due to the superposition of some colors and That I found interesting ! Playing with restrictions, mess with them, pass through them. For this you'll require ingenuousity as you do in pixel art.

I hope you liked it and maybe you want to give it a try ! That would make me glad. And by the way if some of you have already done some linocut I'd be very happy to see them posted on this thread !

See you guys !

Pixel Art / Platformer tileset
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:40:10 pm »
Hi guys ! I'm into tilesets since I've been studying Mrmo Tarius' works, so I started to work on a 16x16 tileset, here it is

It's tiling pretty well I bieleve
Some tiles might be useless but I like having a lot of random tiles to play with. Hope it doesn't affect on readability :/

Any suggestion, critique or advice are highly appreciated !

Pixel Art / Queen of spades

Hi guys.
Started a piece the other day, it still wip but I would appreciate some advice and critics

Neck and arms are intentionnaly long, adds to the creepy atmosphere me thinks.
Still don't know how to shade the skin (It's quite different from the face as it's a larger surface). Also, I like the furr like that, but maybe some highlight could make it look better ?
The snake will be hard the figure out too but I think i'll be able to.

Thanks in advance !

Pixel Art / Isometric Knight
« on: April 01, 2009, 04:21:01 pm »
Hi everyone !
I've been playing to Head Over Heels remake recently, and it just had the envy to make some iso.
The remake
The Amstrad original game

I had an eye at some iso references (Adarias/Ndchristie of course), and here is my first result :

I got a critique about it and I had to rework entirely the iso view and the anatomy of it.
Here is it so far *(The animated gif is a before/after animation)* :

C&C highly appreciated, thanks =)

Hi everyone !

I was thinking about my handle, FrostPumpkin, and I thought it would be cool to represent it in pixels, and get a proper avvy btw

Here it is, but I'm not happy with the ice AT ALL.
I made some test about colors, don't take attention of the green ice xD

I will try to make it more transparent, maybe ?

Thanks

Pixel Art / NES Knight
« on: August 21, 2008, 01:06:39 pm »
The current mockup frenzy gave me the idea to make a NES styled sprite.
I don't know if it fits the restrictions  :mean:
Anyways I've made an idle animation an a walking animation but I still have some troubles with the walking anim  :(

I had a try at an attack animation but it was crap :/

C&C welcome  :D

Pixel Art / 16x16 Robots
« on: August 13, 2008, 06:59:21 am »
After having a try at the Pixelart day 2008, mixed with some Ptoing inspiration, just wanted to make a bunch of small faces with a robotic feeling.
Made 16 16x16 faces and as it came out epic to me, just had the idea to animate it.

10/16 animated.
Most are just opening 'n closing their mouth so it made me think of some conversation box in RPG games, maybe i'll have a try with rpg maker

C&C welcome as usual =)

Pixel Art / Iso Characters
« on: August 08, 2008, 04:14:47 pm »
Hi everyone ;D !
I was working on an angel character for a project I'm working on (I-angel), but my character was too far from the original design, but I was very proud of it so I worked on some equipement updates.

6 colors + trans.  ::)

No need to cite my inspiration, anyone knows it's Adarias  :)

I think I'll do demons, orcs, elves, zora thingies and others if I have some ideas.

Any crits appreciated  :D

Thanks =)
