Pixel Art / [CC] Sprites for RPG/adventure game
« on: July 14, 2018, 05:53:06 pm »
Hi all!  Workin' on another "walk-around-and-talk-to-stuff" game.  I don't have much to look at as of yet, but wanted to pause for a bit before I move on to animating this character.  Feedback of any variety is welcome!

Template (colored more to delineate shapes than have consistent lighting):

Player character:

Thoughts:
- the back-facing sprite seems weird and off-balance to me despite being the same pose but mirrored
- idk how hair works
- the shirt has an opened collar - not sure how well that reads
- previously my sprites have been a bit too reminiscent of other games earthbound; not sure how much I can do in this general style/resolution but I'm trying to make my sprites stand apart a bit more.

General Discussion / Uploading images without AA/blur
« on: July 11, 2018, 09:44:53 pm »
Edit: Internet outage caused me to double-post as I didn't realize it went through the first time.  :blind:  Please delete this or the other one, thank you

After a long hiatus I'm hoping to get back into some more pixelating, but I'm running into a problem that I didn't have previously, and I feel like I'm missing something obvious.  Basically, all the ways I've tried uploading my images add some AA, which is bad enough by itself, but doesn't agree with the nearest-neighbor styling used in this forum, which causes things to look really messed up.

Example:

I can't exactly do a side-by-side of how it should look, but hopefully it's clear where the issues are (especially if zooming in and out).  The original image is a clear PNG and looks fine in practice - it's only after upload that it begins to look blurry.

I've looked into imgur and checked the "high quality images" box which I read would fix this, but no dice.  Other uploading sites that I tried tamper with the image the same if not more.  This seems like something mind-numbingly simple so I'm not sure what I'm missing.  Like I said I never ran into this issue before so maybe I'm going crazy.  Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: It's been a very long time, but if anyone somehow has found this and has a similar problem, yrizoud was correct in his reply: my display setting was at 125%.  What made this weirder is that for my laptop (windows 8 ) it didn't actually show any percentages, just a slider from "smaller" to "larger".  Not very helpful.  Moving it to "smaller" fixed things.  windows UI is tiny and uncomfortable, but things actually display correctly, which is sometimes more important.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Mystery/Adventure Game Art

Hey folks, my last thread got swallowed up and I figured I'd wait 'til I had some progress before I revived it.  Any and all feedback would be very appreciated!   ;D

Pixel Art / RTS Map Icons
« on: March 02, 2012, 10:27:40 pm »
Hey guys, long-time lurker here.  I'm working on an RTS (of sorts) set in ancient China in C# and some artistic direction would be really great, since I have absolutely none.  Everything works on a 32x32 grid, so all the sprites moving around on the map will fit within that.

The first is a general icon for individual people moving around the map.  The idea was sort of a wooden top with chipped paint.

Second is the icon for armies; since I couldn't think of a way to fit the concept of an entire army into a 32x32 box, I settled on a flag/pole.

Third is for cities; I have no idea how readable it is, and I'm pretty sure the colors could be way better.  :-\  The walls of this time were basically packed dirt, thus the yellow, but it probably just looks like gold.  And I think the perspective of the building and the walls are not entirely in sync...

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
