Pixel Art / [WIP] Help with a Space Burger
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:10:11 pm »
I'm working on a "Space Burger" for a pixel art game I'm working on called Platinum Kill. I use an artist for much of the game, but I'm trying to work on some small pieces myself to both improve my skills and save myself money :)

In one level, your player can stand on a floating burger that travels through space. Below is my work in progress version...

The top needs to stay about as flat as it is now so that the player can use it as a platform, but I'm pretty open to other changes. Can someone give me some tips on how to shade this better or anything else I might want to do to make it look better? In game it will be scaled up 4 times its current size. The game has a sort of silly, cartoonish look, so I am not looking for realism here.

Here is a video of the game if you want to see how it fits with the rest of the style:

Description:
Platinum Kill is a fast paced, run and gun shooter featuring lots of action, weapons, and a tongue in cheek sense of humor. It will feature six unique levels each with a challenging level end boss. The game features a chiptune soundtrack with a unique song for each level. The graphics will be a low res pixel art style. The game is playable with 1 to 5 player local co-op (4 gamepads and 1 keyboard player) and up to 4 AI players (limited to 5 real and AI players total).

The obvious comparison with Platinum Kill is going to be with Contra. Contra certainly is a big influence on this game (the original two NES titles mainly) but it is my hope that Platinum Kill can do enough different and better that it can stand on its own as not a copy but rather an envolution of the genre. There have been other entries in the genre since Contra and Super C, but I feel like those failed to really capture the excitement and pace of the original games. I want to recapture that as my starting point and layer improvements upon it. Think how the new Doom still feels like the original Doom games but then expands upon it.

The original game this started as (see History section below) took about a month and a half to complete and I've been working on this version since January of 2017. I'm hoping I can complete this in the next 3 months but I'm bad at estimates and it'll probably end up taking way longer. I do all the programming and design myself and UI graphics and then contract out for in-game graphics and music.

I want to talk about my game here, share what I am doing and gather feedback on how I can make the game better. If you want to playtest my game yourself and can use Steam on Windows, just drop me a line.

Engine:
Custom built using C# and MonoGame.

Platform:
Steam (Windows). Maybe PS4 down the road.

Game History:
Platinum Kill started off as Ultra Aktion for XBLIG and later ported to itch.io. My hope was that I could do monthly releases of titles and be able to support myself as a full time indie dev. Because of the short timeframe, I did all the graphics using simple colored rectangles and instead focused on making the gameplay as fun as possible. To this end, I think I succeeded well, but in a flooded marketplace and even at just a dollar, Ultra Aktion didn't stand out. XBLIG, where I released it initially, was also near the end and had a plethorea of issues (such as the game showing up in new releases but not being able to be downloaded for over a week before Microsoft finally fixed the issue). After the itcho.io release, I placed Ultra Aktion in Steam Greenlight was the comment that if it got appproved, I'd turn it into a full proper game. Well it did and that's what I'm doing now.

Dev History:
I'm the developer and founder of Fun Infused Games. My focus has always been on creating 2D old school styled games, games that I grew up playing and have a special place in my heart for. I started making games back in 2009 with XNA and released 8-9 games for Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) over the next few years. After XBLIG folded, I tried a few other platforms, releasing one game on iOS (Hypership Out of Control) and two on Ouya (ugh, waste of time). For the past few years I have been doing Steam releases and have released improved versions of four of my XBLIG titles on the platform. I also have a PS4 dev kit and a mostly working version of one of my games, but I have since gotten distracted doing Steam games. One day I plan to get back to PS4 stuff and release an actual game there too.

Job offers / [Closed] Pixel Artist for Low Res Contra-Like Game
« on: January 24, 2017, 10:13:46 pm »
I'm working on a Contra-like game and need a talented low res pixel artist to bring it to life. Here is a video of what the game looks like now using my placeholder artwork. Most of what I am mostly looking for is improving the art/animations of the player and enemies. The game will be released on Steam for PC (I have it through Greenlight already) and potentially other platforms if that goes well.

I need animations for the player with gun aimed in 8 directions, several enemies, and a full screen sized boss to start. I may ask for some background artwork too depending on how involved the other stuff is. The game will have 5 levels total and I will need more artwork as we go along, but I want to start with getting the first level squared away first. Everything in the game is scaled up 4 times the size it is drawn at, which I will handle in game.

If you are interested, please send me a link to your profile / examples of your work, your rate, and the time frame you could do this in (I would like at least this first level stuff soon, we can take longer on the following levels, as I haven't planned out everything there yet) and any questions you have for me. I'm looking specifically for pixel art so if you don't have example of that, I am not interested.

Feel free to respond here or email kris AT funinfused DOT com.

Thanks!

Kris

Job offers / [CLOSED] Seeking Cover Art for game Bad Caterpillar
« on: August 28, 2016, 02:47:47 am »
I'm looking for cover art for a game I'm working on. The game itself is pixel art (mostly besides particle effects) but the cover art itself really isn't (I still figured this was a good place to find artists though). Below is a video to give you an idea what the game is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frKh5uIZchs

I have this existing box art I've previously used for the game. I like the idea but I think it looks a bit too grotesque for what I want to present of the game...

This is another cover art I've used on a different game of mine. I'd like basically the same idea as in my current cover art but in this style below... basically less realistic, cleaner lines, more stylized.

If you're interested, send me some examples of artwork you've done in this style, your rate, and how long it would take you to complete this. I don't want the title and title bar changed, just the graphics behind them. The size/resolution should be the same as in my first image (2381 x 1623).

Respond here or you can email kris AT funinfused DOT com. Note I get a ton of spam, so drop a line here if I don't get back to you, I probably just didn't see it.

Job offers / [Paid] Centipede-like Box Art Wanted
« on: December 13, 2012, 08:58:35 pm »
I am looking for a 584x700 image in the style of the classic Centipede arcade cabinet artwork ( http://www.pinballrebel.com/arcade/atari/centipede/centipede_c.jpg ). I'm looking for a similar styled caterpillar / enemy that is wrapped around a space ship. It might look cool if the ship is firing at the caterpillar, if it fits into the image. I expect the caterpillar to look meaner and more realistic than what is on the centipede cabinet. Overlayed on the box art should be the title "Bad Caterpillar" in a cool looking, readable font that matches the style of the rest of the game. This isn't really pixel art but I figured many of you here would be talented in non-pixel art graphics too.

If the ship or caterpillar goes off the screen, I would like them completed so that I could potentially make a wider image for use on the in-game title screen or background or use this portion of the image separately. I would like to have this image in Photoshop format so that I can remove the title and potentially other layers as I see fit.

Please let me know what you think this would cost to create, how long it will take you, and give me examples of other similar pieces that you've done.

Here is a picture from the game itself: http://www.flickr.com/photos/52866295@N07/8264796479/in/photostream

I'd love hear what you think about the game!!! I love pixel games, especially platformers (grew up on Super Mario Brothers games), and it's been fantastic to be able to contribute my own take on the genre.
