Pixel Art / Re: Old sprites fixed

First of all I'd like to say I really like your work, but I am not strong when it comes to character work.

What I would like to suggest to you is in regards of your portfolio. Whenever I get any artist intern portfolios I much rather see the animations and not just the stills.

Keep up that great work btw.

Pixel Art / First Character WIP

Hey Everyone,

This is my very first time doing a character. The premise of the character is a cute angel that will fly around and collect stuff. I normally do environmental work and I want to stretch my wings so to speak. All feedback and C&C is welcomed. Thanks for your time.

Starting to regain likeness? It's hard to notice these things when staring at it so long. >:(

He looks like Kobe Bryant instead of Obama. I think your shading is to harsh for the cartoon/characture look your trying to attain.

I haven't had a ton of time on my hands, but I did find the time today to figure out the death animation. Hope it's a bit less like a hollow balloon now.

EDIT: Added a fix to the knockback. I'm still unsure about this, I'll have to see what it looks like in the context of actually being hit by an attack. I'll also work on an alternate sequence for when it simply gets hit (an attack that doesn't cause knockback).

I'm not an animator (yet :D) but I really like that death animation, nice and fluid, and looks like it will stick to anything it comes in contact with.
Keep it up

So far, so good. I did the same thing you did when studying the DoDonPachi sprite style. You've got it down pretty well, it just needs a few more little details and fiddly bits.

Hey Thanks Olothontor,
I saw your posts but none of your images are up still. Would have been nice to see your process, along with everyone's great work.
What I am considering doing tomorrow is doing one thruster, and focusing more on the wings and cockpit details. Should have a new update tomorrow for everyone to see.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Space Ship

Hey Everyone,
Its been a little while since I've posted anything, I've been swamped with a few new games, and new art contracts keep coming in, but now I am starting to branch off from environments into characters (Eventually animation). Anyways, my newest contract is a space ship avoiding game, so I figured now is the time to tackle Dodonpachi style.
Below is my progress from Start to almost there, I've been looking at the contest area for some great inspiration and borrowed some colour schemes, eventually when I feel really comfortable with this style (with help from everyone here) I will create some more original space crafts.

Also I forgot to add that I am working in a limited space of 64x64 pixels

My first ship

My second ship after imitating some work here (to understand the style)

Third ship, some more imitation

Grey Scale (I saw some one do it like that, helped a lot to understand where my colours will go)

Ship coloured, and I mixed together parts from ship 2.

Right now, I'm missing a cockpit, and I think my wings are a little underwhelming, also I have no guns... but I do love my thruster.

All C&C is welcomed, Thanks for your time as always

Pixel Art / [WIP] Robots TD Game
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:49:05 am »
Hey Everyone.
I decided to work on a private game for a new client just to help me grow as an artist. (I really love this stuff) Anyways, there is no concept for the game other then "Tower D" so I decided to do robots and towers based on the Dodonpachi style (I got the idea from seeing a contest here). So after being inspired I did two styles, the piece on the right is a cartoon look for a tower and the image on the left is the Dodonpachi inspired tower.

The only downside to the image on the left is functionality since the game is 100% top down view. SO what I plan on doing (after c&C) is convert the style to a top down look. I plan on working on this a lot cause I personally want to take my art to another level.

Once again all comments are welcomed.

First I just want to say concept concept concept. This will be the bread and butter before you should even decide to lay down any pixels. During the time of concepts you can really explore ideas, and research what others have done before you. You should at least have a good idea of the entire game down in concept art before you really commit any time to lay down pixels.

Go back and draw everything out a dozen or so times then come back to this project and you will notice an change in your look and approach.

I'm very new to pixel art and unfortunately cannot draw at all so I have to pixel it down straight away.

Nonono.
Drawing and pixelling share the same basics. Practising one is helpful to the other (both ways).
I strongly suggest to start sketching, pencil on paper. Start simple, it's mostly a question of learning to look.
Sketching is more natural and much faster than pixelling, it allows you to try more stuff in a short while.
Just do it everywhere and at all times, it's fun too!

I agree 100% to this comment. I use to just focus on laying down the pixels and I did very little when it came to concept art. Nowadays I've taken up my pencil and I take the time to draw the stuff I want to do in pixels out on the paper. I can great 100 images way faster then moving pixels around to make 1 image.

Also I like your bad guy toon... but your rocks are unfortunately an eye sore :( I'll be watching this.
