Pixel Art / Texture Practice
« on: March 31, 2016, 11:05:44 am »
Howdy been a while since i did anything (not 9 years but whatever) ive been a bit of a lurker for the past little bit so i thought id try something new.  Normally im the type of person to do characters so i thought id try tiles a bit.  The tiles arent intended to go into a game and actually be tilable.  Theyre just practice.  I also couldnt find a good sidescroller dirt and grass tile for the life of me.  The first one is supposed to be earthy stone with grass, the second is mountainy jagged stone the third one is rough rocks that are kind round and the last one was supposed to be some kinda muscley brain type thing.  Critiques and tips would be greatly appreciated.

It looks pretty cool.  There are a something i dont understand.  For example why is the inflatable leader's face purple when his hands are clearly normally coloured?  Another thing that i think if changed would make your piece much better is similar to what pusty said, the parts that are copy and pasted like the stones on the side under the purple people especially, the bricks as well as the soldiers should vary slightly form one to the next or at least every few.  It would help the look of your art.  Im kinda confused upon looking closer whats going on either on the roof or in the trunk of the jeep type of car.  It looks either like scales or liek bananas.  I also understand that youre going for an isometric look but the floor shouldnt be so clean cut into tiles especially on the democratic side around the tree and such.

Other thn that great work on a very intricate piece.

Heres Yo edit:

As you can see in the top right i kinda drew what i assume hes doing (in profile)

Some fixes i made were (excluding the gesture which i didnt touch cuz thats a bit too much for a quick edit, especially this late in the game)
-Shortened the torso (torso was super long)
-Lengthened the legs (they felt a bit short only a pixel or two though)
-Changed the yellows (the yellow you were using before especially on the shirt was just playing with fire.  I wouldnt recommend a colour like that.  For one its gross and unnatural, for two its impossible to shade nice ((kinda))
-Fixed arms (broadened shoulders)
-Tried to fix the folds a bit in the pants (didnt worry about shirt) if you look up actual jeans for reference youll see what i was trying to do (assuming those are khakis or jeans of some sort)

I didnt bother with the hair cuz to be honest it was kinda a mess.  Choose your pixels better please (just play with em till theyre pretty ((thats what i do  :P)))  Also the way the hair is shaded is a bit unlike hair.  Not sure how to fix it but maybe better identify the shading on the hair rather than kinda just outlining it like you did a bit.

Nice work/rendering on your thing good character too

Sign Me Up!!!

I like:
- Western Type Stuff (deserts and cowboys)
- Attractive Landscapes
- Beautiful Colours
- Toned Down Colours (not desaturated)
- Badass Heroine (kinda rebelly, tattoos, head half shaved type of thing)
- Pixels (this ones hard i know )

I dislike:
- Extremely Over Saturated Colours (unless really well done)
- Stuff that is too cartoony in an ugly kinda way (unless its your style, if so then i love it)

Some of my favourite games are:
- Life Is Strange (chloe is the type of heroine that i love)
- Last of Us
- Borderlands (disregard this one a bit)

Feel free to follow none of this but ill like it much more if you somehow follow all of it.
The preferred resolution would be like 200x200 or something (landscape, portrait or square) but im not even sure if im allowed to ask that because resolution is completely up to style so disregard that completely if you want

Just wanted to point out that he didnt want it rendered/finished he wanted to know what his errors were before doing that himself.  Plus the dithering is super overkill.

The pants give 'em folds (sorry im a bit too busy right now to do an edit fer yeh but i may later if i have more time.

Other than that great character good improvement from the others that preceded it.

One thing i wanna say if i may, irrelevant as it is to the current sprite, your process could use some fixing.  When you start with a skeleton almost for fun i notice that you deal with the issues related to proportion and whatnot later rather than during the skeleton phase as you should.  I can undrestand its a bit tough to imagine the body without and features and try to find mistakes but otherwise the more detail you add the harder it will become to fix anatomical issues as well as proportional issues.

Onto the actual drawing.  The scarf looks pretty good but its not cohesive with his clothes.  The clothes are shaded with 2 colours whereas the scarf is shaded with 3 or 4 colours (although that detail isnt really important i thought it was necessary)

Ribcage is still pretty small and you have a bit of a tangent between the belly button line and the lines in the bands around his stomac (just look up what a tangent is ((its when things line up weird)))

I dotn understant why everythign else is painted kinda whereas the face is drawn with black outlines, it looks kinda silly.

Scarfs better but meh.  theres something off about it, look to a real scarf for reference.

*LEMME KNOW IF YOU CAN SEE MY EDITS*

The first thing that i see (although it looks great :D) before even considering shading is cleaning up your sprite.  The way you drew it the heads shape itself is a bit wonky, the arms and legs are uneven and the hair is touching the top of the canvas.  If you plan on animating or just generally viewing the character should not touch the edges of the canvas (unless intentionally)

Generally an easy trick to get good colours for shading is if you have a colour picker take your original colour and make it darker and then for example with skin tones make it a bit more red.  This always works and makes the sprite look super cool.

Heres a quick edit i made for you.  Use it if you want but please for learning.  Id hate to see you cheat out of the work and have to pay for it later.  Try out all the critiques i gave you and see if you can get a product better than mine

It looks super good.  You have a seriously awesome command of pixels.  There are however a few things i cant quite put my finger on that degrade the quality of your work though.  The drawing seems pretty 2d but mixed with the awesome shading it feels kinda weird.  The lines of the dawring are kinda weak (ex: Shoe)  Also there are some lighting issues that i see  (im potentially wrong though so ignore if the need be) Since his left arm is dark cuz its in the shadow of his body why is his hand in the light?  With his eyes shaded in above, be it cuz of his brow, it looks kinda odd when generally the eyes would be very reflective cuz theyre wet.  I also find that the transition from your brightest colour to the second brightest (first layer of shadow) isnt contrasting enough.  When you zoom out you can see this problem especially well.  The dark red/purple is either too dark or the first darker yellow/orange isnt nearly dark enough.

Just zoom out youll see what i mean.  :D

Other than that it looks great

Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Bandaged guy

Looks much better than the first.  My only problem is that the bandages still dont quite look like bandages when youre not using your imagination.  They seem much to smooth to be old mummy type bandages.  Alos with the odd clothes that you added the body lost all of its form and anatomy.  The legs look 1000x better than before (altough the pants could use a few more wrinkles

You also kind of changed his character from one drawing to the next. In the first one he was lanky and lean, now hes stocky and well built.  I dont know its up to you but i think the new one has him much too stocky.

His neck is pretty broken and his head is an odd shape, the arms could use more musculature especially since hes so stocky now.  His arms are much to long.  They should go to about mid-thigh not knee or below.

Sorry im a bit too lazy to do an edit at the moment but maybe later.  Looks gret keep up the work

I would suggest trying to get the goose bumped flesh of the chicken incorporated.  I think it would look super cool if you did it in a super wide dithering type of way.  I like the design of the character though.  They look super cool.
