Haha I think i could have worded my previous messages a little better, I do sound like a lazy person aiming to make some quick cash by selling something with little artistic value.

I do appreciate the replies though, and trust me on this one, I am an artist through and through. I will sample some new stuff and see what sticks for my project which surprisingly is not a game.

However I would like to say something which will hopefully justify my attitude a little better and I'm sure many of you have felt this way before. I have been spriting for 6 years, which is not a small time frame. I have had countless ideas that I started to develop and just could not finish due to lack of resources and time. As a 20 year old with little to no money and a good idea, I want to get it up and running as quick as I can. Which is why I am trying to find one size that fits all (impossible, I know) and while it may seem I am throwing away artistic value, theres a bigger story here.

IMO the "general population" has pretty low artistic interest/appreciation and are more impressed by flashy colours, humour and hyper-realism.
Largest market is probably Chinese youths.
Hmm hyper realism is difficult as I have to develop a lot of sprites. I was hoping people would be into the simpler styles.

I was thinking of a minimalist style, no face details, simple 2 tone shading without outline. But colorful. Do you guys think that would be appealing?

@Decroded:
Noted the tips and crits man, really appreciate it.
And the edit you made looks really awesome. I will try to incorporate some elements from that into my work. Thanks a lot.

Pixel Art / Random stuff

Hey guys, I have been spriting for quite some time and also worked with a few small game companies, but I was never really active on this forum, but here goes.

These are relatively new stuff I was developing for an rpg myself which got scrapped. So I figured I out post them here to get some valid criticism to improve my craft.

This ones unfinished. Got lazy.

Odd mix. Few characters and a fucking tree.

This is for a mobile app.
Animations:

The Scott Pilgrim influence is obvious, I know xD

Anyway, I would appreciate some comments.

General Discussion / Appealing spriting styles

-What is the most appealing spriting style to you?
-What do you think is the most appealing spriting style to the general population?

Hey guys, I am planning to do something in the future and for that I need to research the answers of these two questions. I know that its probably impossible to find a style that appeals to most and choices will vary widely among people, but I am looking for something that can appeal to most niche demographics at once.

If you guys had to develop a style to appeal to a large part of general population and not any particular niche (for example, how chibi cutesy sprites are made to target anime fans), what type of style would that be?

I can post sprites from different styles and make a poll out of it if you all prefer that, but there are literally hundreds if not thousands of styles, so that will be a pain.

Note: By sprites, I mean character sprites mostly, the ones that can be animated effortlessly. Not the full blown pixel art type of thing you see from talented artists.

Also, I am sorry if this is in the wrong section.

General Discussion / Re: Question regarding mobile game graphics

Thanks guys for all of the valuable information. So I guess going for half the resolution is probably the best idea. I will also look into PPI to get a better idea.

General Discussion / Question regarding mobile game graphics
« on: August 07, 2014, 06:48:28 pm »
I have this question which is probably stupid but has me stumped.
Say I want to develop graphics for an IOS game. The resolution of the iphone 5s is exactly 640x1136 pixels.
My question is that should each screen of sprites put together have these dimensions exactly for the best possible graphical output? Can the screens be smaller and be resized when the game runs on the phone? Or is there some sort of scaling that is used?

I am sorry if this is such a really stupid question, but when I opened up a new image on photoshop with 640x1136 px dimensions to make a mockup screen, it really was much bigger than I expected.

Pixel Art / Re: My original character

@Mathias-
I appreciate the input and loving the sword you put in. I realize the palette is tinted purple, I guess its just a personal preference of mine.
I will try to explain a few things, he is a really old character of mine which I recently redesigned. His story (which I made up as a kid) goes something like this:
"The Demon King wanted a child, so he impregnated a human chick and Yoshiro was born to him. Yoshiro must fulfill his destiny by destroying the kingdom of which he is the prince, or will he?"
So yeah, the demon is his transformation. Also the cape does not become the wing, he wears it occasionally. The ripped pants, I guess I could try that.

Anyway, LSW stands for Legendary Super Warriors and it was basically a dbz game for the gameboy. Some people ripped sprites from the game and edited them and made custom characters which ended up evolving into a style of its own. Link to examples:

Once again, thanks for the crit man.

Pixel Art / My original character
« on: May 29, 2014, 06:29:30 pm »
Hey guys, this is my first post on this forum after a long time. Before I start, I feel like I should say a few things. I have been spriting for a few years in a certain style, its called LSW and I am pretty sure its not that well known. Recently, I have tried to branch out and create a new style of my own but since old habits die hard, my new style has a lot of influences from the old one which tbh, I am okay with.
Anyway, here are the sprites.

Major Credit to Orkimedes for the colours.
He is an original character of mine.
I mostly sprite this type of characters and monsters as my ultimate aim is to create an RPG game. This can be thought of as the sideview battle sprites.

Anyway, what I would like is some heavy objective criticism of the sprites, that is, I dont want criticism on the the costume design or originality, I want to know whats bad and good about the sprites.

Sorry for the long ass post guys, I would appreciate any comments and such.
