Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Tunnels Tile Set
« on: April 12, 2009, 11:28:59 am »
Just an update. I've had no luck with the walls. I might try something completely fresh.

I've been fixed on the idea of using sand so i've spent some time on the above. I'm struggling a bit getting the curves right but i think i'm having reasonable success. I just need to spend a bit more time on it. Anyway this is quite new to me so thought a post would be helpful.

Sorry for the delayed response EvilEye and thanks for your comment. You are right about things not aligning up. I guess i was more interested in look and feel rather than things aligning up at that stage, but of course things do start to get complicated when they need to. As a result, i've had to go back a step. I need to work on dimensions/how things will click.

Progress has been very slow. I've set my focus on the door above as its a hard point for me and is unrelated to other issues i can't come make a decision about. Sorry that it's not much of an update but this has been a real challenge for me and i have spent AGES on it. I think its come a long way.

I still need to put fine details on the walls/arches and some small touches to the wood. I need to change the pallate (it does look a little dark to me too). Otherwise i think this is OK.

Thanks again.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Tunnels Tile Set
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:06:00 am »
Hi guys. It's been a while since i've done any pixel work. I found some motivation to try work on your typical iso "Dungeon" tile set. I've been working on it for a day or 2, still have a lot of work to do.

To set things straight, the character is of course GUY from Street Fighter (not done by me), and the palate was taken from a scene in the GBA game Magical Starsign (not sure exactly what scene but it was posted as a reference on a recent post). The scene has a large bug in it. I still struggle getting a palate and will need to spend some time later working it out.

I'm looking to build a 2 level room with a step or two. This will allow me to test how the tile set will work in some difficult scenarios?

anyway, c&c welcome. I have a lot of work to do but thought it might be worth sharing my progress. I'll post an update as soon as i've made decent progress or encounter any issues i need help with.

Cheers.

I love your edit hatch. A real improvement. I always struggle with this kind of stuff so its always fascinating when something like this comes out. I just had to try an edit.

Hatchs vs My edit Based on Hatch's

My quick notes

1. First thing that struck me is the defined jaw line. Very nice. I think this alone is a huge improvement.
2. The height of the forehead is too short in my opinion. I wasn't exactly sure what it was missing at first. It needed temples, brow and then the rest of the forehead. I've given my guy a shave to illustrate. I haven't highlighted the brows on my edit though but take note of the temples and how they are shaded.
3. If you look at your original version and take a look at the centre of bridge in the nose, you should see that the right eye is a little too far away. I've pulled the right eye in a little (i've flipped my version.. sorry). I've also tried to be more subtle with shape of the eyebrows so i've pulled them in a little.
4. The mouth i've changed. This is what i do with most of my portraits. I don't know what it is but i prefer a tight lip so i've made the mouth slightly smaller, removed the shadow from the centre of the top lip and added small shadow to the edges of the mouth. I find this usually looks good.

let me know what you guys think.

An update is in order. I'm jumping the gun here and have started colouring. I just think some depth at the moment will help. I've added the left fist now which is a little different from what Arne done in his edit (although i love his). I'm pretty happy and to be honest it was easier than i thought. I've purposely removed the right arm because i've got no idea really where to start for that angle. I'll work on this next.

As for the shading, i need to say that i've originally used a pallate from a piece done by St0ven which i've modified slightly. Please note this is temporary. I'm not sure what peoples opinions are on here about this but i hope its not a problem..

Anyway, C+C on appreciated.

No don't scrap it. This is a 1st draft, we can improve it but my advice is to not color this piece until you are happy with the outline or shape.

I personally think the arms and shoulders are sound. So lets work from here:
my poinion is that the stomach is too large and his hips and legs are out of proportion as a result. Using the shoulders as a base, i've toned this guy up a little and given him a bit of a different stance.

its rough and i know i probably would need to spend more time on this (my anatomy isn't great either.) but this should help? Let me know if this is more or less in the right direction.

Hey Mike

Its a good start but i do agree he looks a little out of shape.

When i saw this one for the first time the first thing that came to mind are those gothic dragon lamps that you can buy these days. Perhaps using one of these as a reference will help with this piece? I guess you can change it as you see fit but this should help a lot. I've found a reference

I think you'll notice pretty distinct differences between this and yours. I guess i'm not sure if you're willing to try this but trying to replicate this would be my suggestion.

Wow thanks for the excellent response Arne. Very informative and the edit is superb. This will keep me busy for a while. Much appreciated!  :y:

I've been meaning to finish this one for some time but i've been so busy lately. To be honest i've only spent a short amount of time really studying anatomy since i left this but i think things are improving none the less. I realised that the entire thing was really flawed from the start so i made some pretty big changes. I jumped back into this one at the start of the week and have been working pretty casually since. This is my progress at the moment.

right now, connecting the shoulders to the body is a bit of a challenge. I'm dropping it for the moment and will start on getting the basic outline for the legs soon as i've only focussed on the upper body.

C&C welcome.
