That normalmap is not only crude, it's also completely wrong in terms of the sRGB channels relating to binormal/tangent space.
A normal vector facing towards you should be RGB-128,128,255 (XYZ-tangent space 0,0,1), not the dark blue colour you've got now

It should look something like this:

The original pixel art looks pretty sweet, and i only replied to this thread to try and help you out with the normalmaps - i'd rather not turn this into a pixelshader thread (like you said yourself)

There is a properly defined name for motion trails in the gaming industry. They are called 'swooshes'

Is the dog part of the same character universe? He looks really out of place next to the other 3 creations

Otherwise, cleanest pixelwork ever

Adarias is right, the original looks best.
Tarwater, if you're worried about the arms and legs being too small then maybe you should try out what it looks like with bigger ones first?
Personally, i think animating it like it is now might look kind of comical (in a good sense), bouncing around and flapping its tiny arms and legs around.

I don't think you're following the multicolour restrictions. I can see quite a lot of 8x8 blocks with more than 4 colours in them, especially around the teeth and the planet (less if you're using mid gray instead of light gray, i think)

I'm saying this now, because it looks like you're putting final touches on certain areas... Ofcourse, you don't have to follow the restrictions, but i think it would make ptoing a happier person if you did

I also had a hard time figuring out why the little guy was so terrified, but i guess that will become easier to understand if you work out the fly/bee on the nose

I like the self portrait, good stuff  there

Like Helm said, the hands are very important, and since you seem to be going for a slightly cartoony look maybe it's a good idea to make the hands slightly bigger than they are now so you can put more emphasis on them and the grip on the wooden stick

Quick edit (totally over-exaggerated and out of proportion now), hope you don't mind and hope it's helpful:

What about just putting something dark next to the beast, and leave all the other pixels like they are?

3 second edit (B.ush-O.posite-B.east, if you will):

Agreed, the rest is still fighting, but i don't see any real reason to change more than you have to
