Didn't quite work and took ages.

General Discussion / Re: Official Pixelation Off-Topic Thread

Just an idea I want to get of my rather ample chest.

Graph Pad to Pixelart Program Idea

Purpose/benefits: pixel during blackouts, pixel in antitechno social environments, hard copy backup, pixel over hand sketched guides without needing a tablet or pre-scan, etc.
Requirements: gridded paper, pens/pencils
Input: a scan of a pixelart piece drawn into the grid of a graphpad/grid-paper
Output: a pixel clean, colour clean image file

Desirable characteristics
  • Be insensitive to guide lines
  • Only fill pixels when most of the pixel is covered

Manual Mode
  • Allow user to place overlaid sampling grid ontop of scan (rotate, translate, scale)
  • Select and tweak sampled colours for final palette
  • Adjust sampling filter size
  • Adjust colour tolerance
  • Preview results

Automatic Mode
  • Automatically determine grid allignment and scale using image processing techniques, from grid lines or from pixel boundaries
  • Perhaps locallised grid reallignment to compensate for any paper or print stretching
  • Automatically centre sampling points in grid squares
  • Automatic difference threshold based colour selection

Manual mode would be a piece of piss to implement.
Automatic mode would be more fiddly but still quite practical.

Does anything like this already exist?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] - Little Viking

A quick edit I did a while ago, which is more than a bit late. I forgot about it sorry. :-[

I just did what sharpm and Lawrence suggested and shaded some volume into the piece and leveled out the feet and helmet some to make the viewing angle more consistent.
Also added white highlights to the armour to make it appear more metallic.
Never mind the colour change on the horns, I'm just obsessive about bit boundaries and wastage.

Finally got back to this. Still not really down to the pixelling yet, just tablet detailing.

2^4 - 3 colours.

Also experimenting with a background (a first time for everything) but I'm not really sure as it will probably be a bit too busy unless I can overcome my bigotry against bad bitcounts in order to add sufficient colours to wash it out.

Just a quick rough to test.

Malor: While I love B.O.B.'s flower I don't want deforming motion as I'm aiming for a less cartoony feel.

Lengthened arms during slash.
Added cheap turn anim.
Added more body motion and removed a frame from the slash.
Removed a frame from the bite.

Thanks for the comments all.

Reworked the bite to have some withdrawl and lunge. Much better but still not there.

Reworked arm motion in slash, but have yet to carry it through to the body and legs, so lots more work here.

Reduced frame delay on both attacks.

I'm trying my hand at animating a largish sprite, but I've very little anim experience, so please engage maximum criticism mode.

I'm reasonably happy with the flow of the walk, but I really don't like the bite or slash, they look really pussy, when I would rather them look mean.

Shape guide:
Rough silhouette anim (bite, slash, walk):
