Ben, most of the other animations from the game don't deviate much from the standing frame so this suggestion of yours would feel out of place, even though it's better.

You misunderstand, I am not critiquing his workload, or any other artists' who want to take their time for perfection sake. However, speaking from experience making games in my spare time, sometimes you have to speed up your workload, especially if you are both the programmer and the artist. That is, if you want to release it or bump it to a full version in a reasonable, yet still long, date.

If he and his friend can create good art pretty quickly, then good. It's totally up to the artist to manager their free time. Nobody has to take my advice if he/she doesn't wish to. It's just my preference when creating games for the sake of allowing me to program more.

I don't know about the original poster, but Big Brother at least, from what I gather, has alot of professional experience making art, so I don't think he needs that lesson.

No shops near where you live?
Heh, there's a huge shop right at your fingertips, it's called The Internet :p

Young? I'd like to be that again..

Yes, but first he needs to know how to actually make a game which is platform independent and would be best done in a higher level language on a system without any strict limitations and plenty of resources; good tutorials, documentation and help at hand. (imo)

I do know assembly of a few older processors like 6502 and 68000 and Z80, but I never had the chance to use any of them.
...
and to top that off I have to look back and forth through hardware documents to find what are the right registers to use for everything.

Why the hell are you coding in assembly... on ancient machines.. when you're just starting out? Go and smack whoever said to do that. Start making games in high level languages on a pc. Start simple.

Forget about other gaming systems, compression of graphics, hardware limitations right now... that's completely irrelevant at this stage.

Diablo 3.. nice screenshots!

I've been searching for a good light-weight drawing/painting program and found this awesome program:

Paint Tool SAI

Anyone used it? It's just awesome. I was going to go for Opencanvas but this one feels better.

Personally I think you're screwed using a laptop screen for art even with corrections...
If you got a little money on your hands then you can get some hardware to correct it:

Sypder2Express

There's others out there, I forget the names...
