Thanks for starting us off Mathias. And you are correct about forms coming before volumes.

General Discussion / What is your pixel art workflow?
« on: March 06, 2009, 01:32:17 pm »
I thought that it would be a nice idea for newer pixel artists to learn from if some of the more experienced artists from this site could tell us a little about the way that they tackle creating their pixel art pieces.

If you would be kind enough to share a moment of your time and descibe to us some of the methods that you use then that would be great. For example, do you work in a similar way to how you would with another medium such as paints? Do you start with outlines or do you go for volumes? Do you use different methods for lowres art as opposed to higher resolution pieces? All of these things would be handy to learn from.

Personally, I have started to work more on volumes as opposed to outlines as I feel it gives my work a more natural feel, I also start with a rough blurry image sketch and gradually try to bring it into view. When making smaller art for games I still find that outlines are the way to go. I also like the limitations of working with a small palette as it makes things more unified especially for game artwork.

How about you? Please share your techniques so that we can all try a different approach to creating our art. Pictures most welcome too :)

General Discussion / Re: Graphics Tablet Question

If it helps some people then that`s the main thing :)

I`m going to give this a try when I get a chance, hopefully it will work for me too, fingers crossed...

(Edit - Yay it works! It feels so much better to pixel with my tablet now, before it was a nightmare!)

Yes, I am on Vista. How do you disable Vistas Pen\Tablet features? They seem to be well hidden.

Really enjoyed looking at these and your work in general. The only thing that looks off to me is the propeller on the plane, the perspective just doesn`t seem to sit well with the perspective of the wings in my opinion. Otherwise, top stuff, a combination of great colour sense and skill in execution.

Well I`m using an Intuos 2 atm so I`m not sure what the problem is. Pretty annoying though. I tried the double click thing to with no luck :(

Strange, I have tried two Wacoms now (both USB), one on XP and one on Vista, both use different drivers too and they do the same thing. Ptoing, what driver versions are you using if you do not mind me asking?

General Discussion / Graphics Tablet Question
« on: February 21, 2009, 08:00:03 pm »
When using a Wacom tablet to do pixel art do you experience a slight pause every time you prepare to draw a stroke? This doesn`t happen with non pixel art programs but with Promotion and even Paint I am getting a very slight delay. I have found it best to keep the pen on the tablet as otherwise my stroke flow is ruined. Anyone else experience this or know of a solution? I`m guessing it is because the pressure part of the pen is not in use, am I wrong?

Thanks for any advice.

I really like this, looking forward to seeing more, maybe some animation as Helm has already suggested. Personally I wouldn`t change a thing. Has a very cool feel to it despite the low restrictions. Looks very unique too.

I completely agree with ptoing that AA-ing will not save poor artwork it can however lift already good artwork to a higher level if done well. It certainly has its uses.
