Pixel Art / Re: Ophelia - Need Advice on Foliage
« on: May 05, 2021, 10:16:21 pm »
Whoa. The new foliage looks fantastic, dude. Congrats.
And the detailing on the trees at the far back.

The rocks (they're rocks, right?) in the middle of the stream look a little bit noisy to me, so that, together with the colors you chose, stablish a visual connection with the flowers on her head, and that's a bit confusing.
I'm kind of reading them as flowers right now, and it looks like she either picked some of those from the river to put them on her head, or the opposite, she took them off and threw them in the river.
If, instead, they're meant to be flowers, then I think you need to add darker shades and give them more definition.

For the closest bank you could just add leaves like I said before. Bigger leaves. You could try to make similar foliage as to what you added in the far bank, but bigger and more detailed.
Well, not necessarily more detailed, but making us see those two and think that they're the same type of leaves, just at different distances.
Could something different too, of course, but I think it would look neat if you did something like that.

Other types of leaves mixed in would make it even better.

But IMHO it looks gorgeous already.

Oops, sorry, I hadn't seen your edit.

I think the helmet looks fine as it is, but you *could* do something like this instead if you would want to put more holes in it:

Nothing fancy, really. And slightly asymmetrical.
Now, I think if you added more it would basically be just read as noise. Not to mention it would be a bitch to animate.

EDIT: And I do prefer pose #2.

EDIT 2: Wait, maybe something like this would help sell that crease in the middle:

The foliage is looking great, man!
Those in the margin that is farthest away from us, but still closer (edit: esp. those near her shoulder) could be a bit larger, but those in the far back look great! Keep it up! :y::)

Good lord... That is so good it's scary.

The helmet could have some detail on the side, like a symbol or sticker or... something.
(but I'm partial to Star Wars-type helmets, with lots of details painted on, grime, etc.)

Aw, thank you. Honestly I think you could do a much better job than what I did there, though.

IF you want to keep working on it, I was thinking (and doing some research, trying to find refs but failed miserably) of a bit of a Charles Vess style fairy... Though that could clash with your style there. Yours is rounder and cuter, Vess does longer, leaner and flowyer (that even a word?) fairies.

No need to tag me, it's fine. Glad to be of help, especially after you helped me so much already with my stuff too.
But if you wanna follow me there, I'm @f5kn.

EDIT: The smile is growing on me, don't know which one will make it to the final version
Haha, that's basically how I felt when I did it. "Mmm... kind of like it, but I don't know... yeah... maybe... hmm..."

I tried making her cheek a little rounder too.

This is so pretty and cute it terrifies me of messing with it. It's beautiful, Sein.

I was thinking the axe didn't need to appear heavy because that's a magical creature and she could be super strong, but modifying that really added to the piece. But it ended up also covering more of her outfit, so... Maybe you need to compensate for that?
Have you thought of a longer/ish dress? Something that might read as semi-translucent? Maybe with pastel colors..?
Maybe adding "magic sparkles" around her..?

Dunno, just throwing ideas.

---

Something kind of like...

Just imagine if that was well drawn. :P

But I mean, something flowy, dance of the seven veils -like.
It can be hard to convey transparency, though.

Probably longer if you have the room for it.
Maybe something with an aura or trail, something to give it more of a magical feel.

The fist on her hips looks properly lighted, but I just can't imagine anyone placing a closed fist on their hips.

Umm... I'm not sure I follow you here. I didn't exactly mean to have her with a closed fist, more something like this (please excuse the half-assedness... and the stubby fingers. :p):

EDIT- But I guess you're right, the fingers shouldn't be too dark, as the light comes not from straight above, but a little bit from the front of her body. So at least the same amount of light as the forearm. And the forehead.

But more importantly, wouldn't the bucket be hitting the knee unless he twisted his torso or put one leg further back? I tried to have a go, let me know what you think.
Yeah... Maybe... I think it could be touching his knee.
Both look fine, though, to my eyes. I didn't want to put that leg back (or try to imply that) because I was afraid it might look like he could lose his balance.

They do look better, yes. IMHO, anyway.

Still, I tried cleaning them up a bit more:

I think it helps judging the colors a bit better if I use a medium-dark grey background, so I put them in one.
I tried making the tank a bit less organic looking (dunno if I was successful or not) by using more regular forms and 45 degree angles.
I can't understand the forms of the bike very well yet, so I invented a little.
Reshaded a bit of both to try and get a more consistent lighting.
Tried to hue-shift the colors on the bike so it doesn't look too monochromatic.

Didn't mess up with the enemy, but it does have lighting/shading problems as well. There's some pillow shading/banding going on and it's a bit too dark.

One problem that I can see right away (yet unrelated to color or readability) is that the background kind of tries to follow some perspective by having the floor at an angle and the platforms perfectly horizontal, but if your tank for some reason has to go down to the floor level, then it will (may?) look inconsistent. I mean, it does look a little already because the treads are not aligned horizontally.

Cleaned up a few things, tried to make it more similar to your refs. here and there.

Maybe the compo needs more energy, but I don't feel like I can change it without redrawing too much.

EDIT: Alt face... and a few more tweaks.

Added a new frame (yeah, I know, I'm going slooowly...), changed some things here and there:

The pacing is somewhat consistent...

I'm thinking his boot... things, sleeves, fur(??) are making it a bit hard to follow the movement of the feet. But I'm not sure if that's that problematic.

Perhaps if I darkened the left leg when it gets behind the right one...
