Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Dragon
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:48:56 pm »
I think the most important thing you need to do is stop thinking about the dragon as a 2D drawing and think of it as a 2D drawing of a 3D object.  While you have a lot of colors and attempts at shading, it looks flat, like a paper dragon rather than an actual dragon.

You might want to keep the general look/design the same but you should consider re-imagining the actual stance, proportions, etc. and this time think of it in a 3-dimensional sense.  Some things that might help:

http://sashas.deviantart.com/art/The-Perspective-Tutorial-94166651  <- just quickly googled for a perspective tutorial skimmed this and it looks good

If you have rudimentary 3D design skills already then maybe model a very basic dragon out of primitive shapes (cubes, pyramids, spheres, prisms, etc.) to get an idea of how the volumes would look in 3D space, and go from there.  If not then just play around with drawing different objects around you by hand with pencil/paper from different angles to learn how 3D objects would look in a 2D projection.  Then try to figure out what type of shapes a dragon could be made up from (maybe start with a box for the head, a bent cylinder for the neck, and then try a more complex version where the head it made up from a thin box with a triangular jaw and triangular nose ridges/beak and bent cones for the horns, etc.) and once you get an idea of what this basic skeleton would look like together in 3D space, you can better figure out how to draw the actual dragon.

As for colors, it's best to pick colors that have decent contrast (most of the time at least, there's obviously exceptions) because with the dragon for example it's hard to make out a lot of features because everything is dark and very close in brightness in relation with each other, other than the neck part.

Hope this is helpful feedback!

the expression when he tries to lift it doesnt seem right to me, it looks more like a surprised look.  I think it would be something more like this:

http://c3e308.medialib.glogster.com/media/a2/a2a76e0d8713ee194bf18a7b7813f26baecb87f12f6cdb48474d9ba186933c34/heavy-lifting.jpg

I think you're actually right, as was PPD in his example animation, thanks for pointing it out.  I'll try out some facial variations later today/tomorrow to find something that clicks a bit better with a "lifting" face -- all I know is that I kind of have that "Surprised" look on my face when I lift, but I think I'm in the minority

For the hair, I personally prefer subtle animations and I don't try to match them to what the body is doing, just make it feel right. Example of an old sprite of mine:

Good point, I think you're right.  I'm going to tone down the hair a bit and see if it looks a little less silly that way.  Probably still a bit jumpy (since I want him to look like he has a large mass of hair) but definitely a bit less extreme.

Thanks for the feedback like always guys!

Scrapping this project, it's become too much of a ALttP clone and I've grown sick with it.  I think I'm going to work on my general art/music skills a bit more before going forward with my next (and more original) game idea.

Thanks for everything though!  Learned a lot through this.

EDIT: mostly dropping because I think if I work hard on my art/music skills for another few months and see how much better I get.  I agree with /v/, this is too much like a glorified romhack and not an original game idea.

Looking really great!  Some small nitpicks, I'd probably put weaker contours and have less contrast near his mouth, since it's standing out a lot more than his more noticeable features (his eyes and nose, imo), and maybe go with a bit less contrast near the mouth and nose area, since it looks like it indents/is too flat around that area.

Nice work on the Marc Bolan one!  Nice colors and resemblance, tho the cheekbones are maybe a bit too pronounced.
Thanks! Once the likeness got a bit better, I was quite proud of him. And yeah, the cheekbones are maybe a bit much, I think it's part of my style, as that seems to return in my drawings. I'll leave him alone for a while and look back at him in a few days with fresh eyes to see if I want to correct that or leave it as part of the drawing.

As for syd barret tho he looks like a really sickly version of syd, he actually has a pretty wide jaw:
Lips are also a bit pronounced and his eyes are a bit larger, but I think other than that you really got his haunting post-drug gaze down pretty well.  Nice job
Yeah, I completely agree. The gaze is there, but it's not his eyes :-\. I feel that once I can get likeness going in the eye region, it'll be easier to fix the whole drawing. I'm going to have to study his eyes for a while, before I can finish the drawing. Thanks for the comments! (Also nice that you know who these people are btw, I was afraid no one would recognize them :))

Edit: Is this better? It feels better. I still have to shade most of it obviously:

Yep!   ;D love Syd, Piper on the Gates of Dawn is easily one of my favorite albums of all time.

Does look better, a lot less sickly!  Jaw should be a bit more angular, though.  Also, just realized how much hair you have on Syd -- I bit unrealistic, unless you were going for that.  Lowering the hair mass might make his features more recognizable (since his head will look thicker/bigger as a result).  A few more things:  might not want to keep mirroring the face exactly, even if the light source is from the front, it'll look more natural with a slight bit of unevenness; and, his neck is really really thin (though I've personally got no studying of neck anatomy), but I'm guessing it's a placeholder since you did a much better job with Bolan's neck.  Did a (really quick and sloppy) edit, may or may not be helpful, just for ideas.

Cool stuff.
Maybe try a little more expression and force.

Awesome!  ;D  Thanks for the edit, I was aiming for something cute/expressive and while I liked what I had, your edit exaggerates it a lot better.  I'll use it as an example when redoing/editing that fail-pull animation, and also with the lifting animation (and of course future animations)

Played around with the hair a lot today.  Been using Paint for drawing, Grafx2 for quick color edits/counts, and GiMP for animation.  I would use Grafx2 for animation but whenever I import a gif into it, the palette is all whack -- but GiMP works fine for now anyways.

current   <---   first test   <---  old

Might have overexaggerate the hair a bit but I was mostly just toying with possibilities (partially as just general animation practice) so I'll just tone down the movement later.

EDIT:  Had 15 minutes in class so I did an initial test with the heavy object pull animation.  Still not where I want it but it's getting there.

Left to right: old, first test, current, and the last one is just a bit of an overexaggerated version I did to test against the current one (might be a bit too animated -- so to speak)

Late at night, did another easier animation, or at least a first shot at it

Ah well, scraping and redoing are different.
It can be useful to do the same animation multiple times.
Have them all open and compare them.
Uploading to a blog or such is also helpful because you can see all of them animate at the same time.
Here's some examples I did for Ryumaru a while ago.
His is at the top and everything below is variations I messed around with.
They are not exactly what you are trying to achieve but will perhaps give you some thoughts.

Thanks for the tips!  I think I'm going to have a second shot mostly from scratch (maybe keep some frames of the arms) at that running animation tomorrow (bit too thought-intensive for this late at night) and compare it to the original, and merge the best of both, or revise the first to add whatever I discover along the way.

Try animating the shadows on the hair as well.
It can be helpful to start there and then work on breaking the borders.

What is phil fishing?

Thanks for the tips!  I'll work with the strands of hair inside the borders and work outwards, then.

As for phil fishing, Phil Fish apparently grew to hate his own work (some Fez sprites) after staring at small details for a long time, and almost completely scrapped perfectly fine assets -- in a similar sense I was about to scrap the whole animation because I kept seeing more and more wrong with it even though my friends said everything other than the hair was pretty fluid.

Didn't get as much done today, lots of schoolwork and sleeping.  Just working on some misc. animations

Sorry I can't do an edit, but I'd definitely make it less noticeable.

ie. don't make the hair change so much.

While I like the general idea of the hair moving, I think you're right, it's too accented.  I think I hate the hair flip in front of his face the most, I might just remove that entirely.  Thanks for the input! -- I wasn't sure if others would like it and if I was just phil fish'ing it.

Started working on a run animation.  Think I'm satisfied with the torso/arm movement (maybe might make the arms more exaggerated at the top of the leap frame) but I want to better animate the hair so that it flips while running (right now it's only one keyframe) and make the legs look less awkward (they look like they're running at an inwards angle -- should be easy fix later)

Edit: added a revision, which is the second one
