Pixel Art / Re: Ebook Cover: Crawl (WIP)

NaCl: Fair enough--All the best pixel art I've ever seen is about this size (and it's the size I need to work with for ebook covers), but I've got a ways to go before I'm on anywhere near the same level as this guy. I think this is coming along pretty well--I feel like I could actually use it--but it's taking far too long at this size to be viable.  Next time, I'll try a smaller image with some kind of border with extra space for the title/author name to make up for the size difference.

Anyway, here's what I've got at this point:

Update.  Any C&C is greatly appreciated--I'm still doing a lot of this by feel.

Pixel Art / Ebook Cover: Crawl (WIP)

Hey all,

I'm working on a cover image for my latest ebook short story. Very WIP right now, but I wanted to see if the basic concepts are working out so far. I'm also unsure of how to handle the larger flat surfaces--the walls, sill, and sash.  If anyone knows of tutorials or good examples of ways that people have drawn/textured those sorts of big blank spaces in pixel art, or has advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you do go with top-down foliage, I think you would do well to add a thicker fringe of leaves, and a solid leafy green rather than black in the middle (like in the Star Ocean shot). My first guess when I saw them was pits with grass trailing into the edges, and my second was dark swamp water with a shallow fringe. There's just not quite enough in the way of visual clues to say that they're the tops of trees.

The texture is pretty nice on the trees, but I had a hard time figuring out what they were. This is an isometric game, looks like--consider the angle of your cliff--but the trees look like they're viewed from straight up.

Pixel Art / BfW-Style Fantasy Units

Hey all,
Some units I made in the style of Battle for Wesnoth. The larger drake unit made it into the game. The lich got beaten out by a better sprite, though.  So it goes.

Thanks everyone for the critiques on my threads. I'm definitely soaking all this up and taking it to heart, even if I don't continue working on the mushrooms. More stuff soon, if I can find the time!

Thanks for the crit! Here's a first attempt at adding more of a texture:

Sorry about the bright blue and red.  I know you'd never see a mushroom that color, but I wanted to try different kinds of color ramps and figure out how to color a very saturated object.  Did I completely miss the mark on that, or is it just that the saturation looks funny on a mushroom?

Thanks!  That's really helpful.  I guess this stuff is super tricky, huh?  I may have to come back to it later, after I'm more sure I've got the basics down.

I like these a lot.  The one thing that looks odd to me is that the warrior appears to be the smallest of the four. He's a couple of pixels shorter than the others, and even if he's the same width, certain elements make the others look bulkier--the warrior has very narrow legs, for instance.
