For some reason, I'm reading it as a creepy lollipop-face man, wearing a monkey head to cover his crotch. Maybe I'm just an idiot, though...
The monkey's legs, too...would they bend like that? Even if they could, why is he just flapping them around everywhere? I think it'd be better if you kept the legs relatively motionless compared to his arms...he should just be using them for balance, right? The tail not bouncing is making it harder to read as a tail instead of a head, too, but I understand this isn't finished!

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this guy, though. You're one of my favorite artists on here, so I'm sure I'll end up loving the finished product. And he is a cute character! =D

:P try and keep your legs motionless when you walk on your hands..
yea.. i'm thinking the tail will be a separate sprite..
and it'll whip stuff. and grab stuff too...
so you can like.. go like this and grab someone:
and it'll then hold the enemy above the monkey's butt..
and then you can fart on it like this:
and it'll do something to the enemy maybe.. idk yet..

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but that's how you do it...I *do* keep my legs relatively still when I walk on my hands, otherwise I'd fall over.

If you were aiming for it to read immediately as a monkey walking on its hands, rather than a person walking quite peculiarly, I'd suggest having the legs hang functionless as they probably would were a monkey to do this (Given their position, they read as arms) and in adjustment for the legs no longer visually allowing for balance, use the tail to counterbalance the hanging legs, breaking its circular and easily-mistaken-for-a-head shape.

Right now most of the visual cues line up with an animation of a person walking. I don't think many people will instantly see it as otherwise, in its current form.

I want it to look like a head.. that was the intention- it's funny that way. People will be like WHAT!?

edit: here's a standing anim..

haha, that is awesome! The animations make me want to play this!

But I thought it was a lolipop man too! :D
I think you could angle the legs differently to make it more clear.

thanks.. hmm.
maybe if you can sketch me an example- i kinda like the way it is, so its hard ot imagine it other ways..

Hard to sketch at this resolution..
At least for me :D

I thought I'd give it a perspective. I have no idea about monkey anatomy though so this might just be wrong
Moving the tail up quite a bit makes it read like a tail though, rather than a lolipop head ;)

lol.. I kinda like that edit. hmm. the small legs are funny :)  :y:
I'll need to experiment with similar proportions and see how it looks animated. thanks!

It would be hilarious if the baby would walk and fall flat on his face.

It's about time baby tossing caught on.

I like the monkey and the animation. My mind jumped to Lollipop-Man, too at first, but mainly due to the lack of color. Not much to say about the baby itself at this stage. The idle animation is somewhat awkward, but I'm sure it'll get straightened out later. Very funny; I'd like to see more!

Hahaha, that is awesome :D
I was thinking more of a real face plant and not a roll, but that is hilarious too! :D

This game needs to be made!

Agree, though it would be pretty disturbing. Along the lines of BoI.

For a while I thought the first sprite was a monkey (because of the topic title only) with a spiral for his head.   :-[

The falling baby looks really cool. I would develop that into a colored animated sprite. If I was Alex. :)

these all remind me of Shel Silverstein drawings. :) The baby and the monkey are the best things so far imo.
It would be hilarious if the baby would walk and fall flat on his face.
I second this. I think you should keep the rolling but also have one where he waddles a few steps and then tips over.  also after you throw the baby if bounced off something then just sat there stunned for a few seconds then started sucking on its pacifier or got back up and started walking away.

This would be a really cute game in that really horrible sort of way...

good luck... :)

interesting stuff, quite whacky and whimsical, and I initially read the first animation as a spiral headed man too, I think keeping the sketcherly aesthetic will have a unique edge, can't help but feel I walked into an insane asylum after staring at these awhile :P

These are pretty awesome.  Looking forward to seeing how these strange pieces fit together, and what weird world they live in.  Tell more about the project, how do they fit together, how are they gonna be presented?  Or is it just a fun exercise?

The rolling creatures really make me think about a game where all characters roll...for no reason. :P

The licker is an awesome design.

This is all drawn with mouse, Alex?

Hope you won't mind a short digression.

I'm having huge problems with drawing on my tablet, but my drawing skills are also quite poor ATM. Just wondering if I upping my drawing skills with normal pen and paper will it show when I try it with mouse. Your experience? Thanks for answering.

What's the problem you're having with the tablet? I don't think a mouse will be much different, honestly. But being a better artist will obviously help your artwork, no matter what you're using to draw with, right? =)

I'm kind of leaving things open at the moment- allowing things to evolve as I add stuff I guess.
I have a few key ideas regarding story twists, but other than that, just doing whatever at the moment.

yea, this is all done with the mouse. I like to use the mouse for pixel art because i find it easier to position the cursor and just click whereas with a tablet you're using more of a stroke motion.. but yea, depends on what you're going for I guess.. For low-res graphics, it makes more sense to me to just use a mouse, but if you're comfortable with a tablet (I find it takes a while to get comfortable to using a tablet), then it makes no big difference as long as you're drawing things how you intend them. So yea, drawing in general will help in any case. Like with any skill, the more you do it and experiment and see what works and doesn't, the more you get comfortable with conveying whatever you want

monkey can ride..

haha wow that latest addition is awesome  the entire thing is full of such bizarreness and character hope this keeps going and evolves into something playable, your animation skills are quite competent you're breathing alot of (crazy) life into them.

I have to say I was a bit skeptical with the first anim, but the more you did the greater the project became. Rollinglion is my favorite
but all have that great whacky feel. The black/white has grown on me but it would be nice to see what you would do with them in color.

Any chance for tiles? Mockup? We all want it to be playable at this point!
