The ocean is too flat, took me way too long to figure out the tentacle was coming out of it. The overall composition is a bit iffy, try to tweak that empty space on the left to guide the eyes more towards the spire.

For example, you could have the title breaching from the water with the larger words under to imply a sort of "tip of the iceberg" feel. I am on mobile right now but will post a mockup of what i mean soon.
Ideally you want to avoid boring empty space, though.

I personally welcome the incoming robot genocide. Death to the silicone menace!

His beard is a longer squarer shape and he's missing the lines under his eyes. His eyebrows also seem too upturned, in the photo they're way more "pulled together", i'd say a pixel or two extra width inwards. They also need a bit of thickening, dude's got square brows. His nose looks different to in your piece, i'm seeing dimples between the nose edges and moustache that i think were intended as extensions of the nostrils. Can't be sure.

Also, his dreadlocks.
it's the small things!

Looks more like a pile of snow, honestly. I'd say give it some larger spires and maybe some cloudcover to sell the height

Too much black, and the eyes feel too flat. Study eyesockets a bit, it's handy to have that shape on hand.

A female human skull, so you can understand the underlying structure

And an unrelated female face, so you can see how that affects the structural composition of it.

While the main shape of your face is excellent, the middle bit is where it's hitting trouble since there's no attention to the browline or the nose besides that small anime nubbins and as a result the face looks like a flat panel with features drawn onto it.

I'd say your best succeeded. It's a good tree, great texture on bark and leaves. Symmetry, though rare in nature, is pleasant to the eye here. My only real suggestion would be to try a variety of trees. Dead ones, scraggly ones, droopy, bent, unusual etc.

If you're going for surrealist, try something subtle, like so:

Pixel Art / Re: Help with Shading a Train
« on: September 04, 2016, 02:40:31 am »
I'd go for a permutation of the last one, but with stripes instead. Most trains have painted interiors, for one thing, so the bottom half would likely be a different shade than the top. Secondly, you really only /need/ to use that kind of pixel crosshatch to create the illusion of other colors and midtones when working with a limited pallete.
It can work in other instances, but otherwise it is often way more productive to just use standard shading techniques so long as you can work within your color limitations.

Shadingways, it might be best to work from reference. As it's shaded now, it looks like it's supposed to be domed yet the linework remains flat. Take a look at this picture of a subway with a similar design I found:

I'm assuming you intended some permutation of the BART system, which has a slight "bubbling out" at the middle. the slope is very slight though, and as such there's not much of a shadow cast by it.

With the angle of the face the hood would be covering the left part of it more. Hoods also tend to not suction to the face, opting rather to hang over them. Here's a photograph and someone else's sketch I found off google, hopefully illustrating what I mean!
