Oh yeah, I'm going to deliver some really fine pixels this year. I swear on it! :y:

General, thematic stuff I like: Animals. Especially colourful birds with big beaks, and insects with their life-cycles (egg>larvae>pupae>metamorphosis into adult) and utilitarian design (beetles, butterflies, moths, cicadas). Reptiles and mammals are rad, too (if they have horns, thorns and/or bright colours).
Classic western literature (Ovid, Homer, Euripides).
Folktales and mythological stuff (the aesthetics of greek, nordic, mayan and japanese cultures)

Specific, pop-culture stuff: Dark Souls, Shin Megami Tensei games (esp. Persona 2,3,4 and Digital Devil Saga), Nintendo classic series (Zeldas, Marios, Megamans and so on), shmups by Cave (love Progear!), King of Fighters games (fave characters: Vanessa, Ramon, Maxima, Kim, May Lee), Street Fighter 3rd Strike and onward (fave characters: Blanka, Dudley, Hakan, Makoto, Abel), Mass Effect 1&2 (note: Shepard was always female to me)

That should be plenty to go on. If there ain't much resonating with your creativity here, just make a rad animal!

Merry Happy! 8)

Just make a 100x100 or 200x200 px canvas and get to drawing. You don't have to fill up the entire space. Rather, start with a relatively large workspace, and then crop it when you're done with the piece.

Pixel Art / Re: Health Bar

Adding to what wex just wrote, you could reinforce the symbolism in your health bar by shaping it like a heart instead of a block. A glass heart getting more cracks in it as you take damage would be a pretty clear message, I think.

I don't think the thing he's carrying should align with movement of his right leg. When I try walking while carrying something modestly heavy in my right hand, I intuitively swing it slightly in the same direction as my left leg (and the opposite of the right one). I think that's how you'd normally retain the balance when extra weight is shifted to one side.

I have trouble picking colours for skin when working digital. Like, when I've settled on a base tone, finding the correct darker tone for shading is guesswork to me. Results end up grayish and cold, or too saturated, so that it no longer works as a shade. All skin - flesh - usually have a warmth to them (given proper lighting conditions and all that, ofc), and I can't quite achieve that. The workings of freckles, blemishes, etc. are also mysteries to me.

Is there any general knowledge on how these things work that are to be taken in consideration; that could guide me when I'm picking out a palette?

Any help would be much appreciated! :-*

Pixel Art / Re: pixel landscape

I don't like the debris stuff in the foreground. The image is so dark, so the bright stuff sharing the same colours come off as being part of the same thing, and on the same level of depth. At first look for me, anyway. Also, the piece of debris on the left is a very generic pixel shape, and it breaks off from the style of the rest of the objects in the image (a piece of abstract symbolism (that exposes the grid) in a mimetic landscape). It's noise, essentially.

First thoughts: there's staircase banding on the left arm, and the hat's shape is very ambiguous. More deliberate use of shading and contrast could make the hat more defined.

Very charming design! Also, good colour choices.

I've been re-working my totem animal with a cluster-focused approach

The palette is mostly the same as Piledriver's original. I've modified the colours a bit to make them contrast more, but basically they're still straight gradient ramps. Also, I'm struggling with creating depth on the claw, and the bottom half in general.

Thoughts?

If you're looking for "what people actually wear", I guess looking through major clothing brand catalogues is a good place to start. People are going to wear the clothes these provide, and the brands are going to try and supply the kind of clothes people wear. Perfect feedback-loop, no? https://www.hm.com/us/ http://www.jcpenney.com/ http://www.jc.se/ (common swedish store - perhaps some regional differences to be found?)

Honestly, though, I'm at a complete loss for this kind of knowledge, too. I'd also like the kind of fashion reference that you're looking for. Maybe there's a fitting category on Pinterest? (I only have a vague idea of how that site works...)

Here's a wonderful site to get lost in: http://www.humansofnewyork.com/

I'm counting on Crow being on top of this kind of information. Any other important modifications, Crow? Graphics or performance boosting? Is this catch-all mod all there is to it?

I just got completely outclassed by the strange, flying boss monster in the forest. :ouch:
