[WIP] First pixel art

on: August 08, 2012, 07:35:51 am
Hello, This is my first pixel art try. I know I am not good, but I would like to strive to become better. This is for a 2d platform game I am making :)

welcome, nice to see you trying to improve, the most major advice would be to try and increase the contrast of your colours, the colour tones are quite soft and from a distance read as the same colour quick edit

the shape and style change is extreme but the principles are worth noting, also magenta is a good alpha colour as it's generally unused, but as you pixel it can have a severe influence on your perception because it's quite eye burning

Well, I have the new outline done. I noticed before that the body was shaped weird. I did not do shading yet unfortunately.

Edit-----------------------------------------------------------------
I decided to start all over with a new style in general here is what I have so far.

lol yeah i know  partly intentional so the methods would need to be extrapolated/interpreted more than just copied, that and just 'coz

@Final what type of style are you aiming for? if you are aiming for Super Deformed anime style, then I think the head needs softer curves and shape, and if it's for a platform game, I tend to try and remove outlines from the bottom of his feet, so his feet will be flush to the surface and not doubling above it, like the way in my edit he stands on the image boundary imagine that the area below his feet (forum post background) is the ground/platform he is standing on.

nice decision that looks really good actually, not entirely sure about the eyes though, and after opening noticed it's mostly 2x, with as far as I noticed 1 row of pixels shaved off the face

some eye suggestions and using the resolution completely, if you want to go for a chunky style maybe you should try tall pixels? essentially every pixel is 1x2 (1 wide 2 tall) it'd fit with the adjustment you've made already, whereas if you went with wide pixels (the exact same thing but rotated 2x1) you wouldn't keep that.

You are right, I changed the eyes and added hair, :)

those outlines are jarring when compared to the character, I think you should keep that style going, something like this maybe

It would be easier to help with some sketchy animation to start with. Otherwise, I can only recommend
- do not attempt to use idle frame as part of the walk animation
- plan 6 frames at least for a convincing animation,
- start sketching only the feet and check the movement is correct
- you're better to draw stick figures from scratch for each frame than trying to copy/paste/alter a full rendering of your sprite.

good luck.
