Pixel Art / Byte Me - New ZX Spectrum game
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:34:01 pm »
Started on the graphics for a ZX Spectrum game (coded by another) and the game is going to be released at the Replay Expo in Blackpool at the beginning of November. So, other than the constraints and limitations of the ZX Spectrum, I've also got time constraints. The game is set in a futuristic fast food diner where you fire either burgers or hot dogs at buns to make a hot dog or a burger for a customer order. I think it will follow the lines of Tapper only you have to make the food before delivering it to the customer. So, I've started on the graphics and here they are so far.

Main Sprite.

Burger/Hot Dog Firing.

Can of Boke (Health).

Slice of bread (enemy)

Hot Dog Bun (enemy)

Sesame Seed Roll (enemy)

Tomato (enemy) ..yeah, it's supposed to be a tomato!

And since 1 of the customer types is a Stormtrooper (I don't know, I was just told that this was to be the case), here's the graphic.

Still got quite a few graphics to do.

Pixel Art / Re: Hutch the Rabbit [Early WIP]

Yip, I will re-colour him. I'm not going to change the design - no need, really. I asked my 4 year old son what he thought it was when he saw it for the first time (the animated version, below), "A RABBIT!", he shouted as he left the room. It's good enough for me :) . Anyway, here's the 8 frame walking animation. Just the line mono version until I add the colour.

I think I need to animate where the ears join the head as those parts are a bit too static and would bounce slightly.

No, I see what you are getting it, especially from your edit. But, from your edited version, the rabbit is now devoid of any stylist character what-so-ever. It looks like a standard western-ised rabbit design, though. My original version follows my style and it's fun to break (or bend) the rules, isn't it? We don't really want everything to look similar.

and the majority of people who look don't get it, and you'll probably have to redo it.
well, yeah, the majority of people in here..well, the ones that have replied..haven't got it. Various other places where the design has been posted people have got it, which, from my point of view, the design has succeeded.

First off what Puppet said about ditching the outlines is kinda right. From experience I find that black outlines don't really look good. On a draft of the sprite, perhaps.
Oh, I know. I'm going to be doing a version without the black outline. Part of me has delusions of grandeur think of Super Mario World 2 : Yoshi's Island.

Then, do you really need dithering on a sprite this small
Yeah, i know. I can't decide on this. There's a good chance I will make the colour palette quite small, so this may indeed change.

Well, here's an edit and a latest version.

- Changes to the colouring
- Arm added

I think the main problem was that there didn't seem to be any real obvious separation between head and body.

So, yeah, he's a rabbit. Nose, and his buck teeth on his face.

Either way, body's too short. The whole thing seems to be horribly unbalanced, so I have no idea how it manages to stand up.
??? but but but but.....it's a cartoon character for a video game..it doesn't have to be anatomically correct and all that stuff  :) I mean, I can't imagine Jim Davis's publisher saying that the cat he's just drawn for his cartoon strip just wouldn't be able to stand up with that large head and the smaller fat body...or Warner Bros telling the artists of the Looney Tunes characters...well, you know  :hehe:

Pixel Art / Hutch the Rabbit [Early WIP]
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:23:56 pm »
I've been asked to produce some pixel graphics for a platformer with a design style of my choice. So, this morning I did a quick sketch then pushed some pixels resulting in the following :

Not spent any time on the colouring as I was just trying to get a 'feel' and I'm humming and hawing over the black outline, which I've been asked to keep (and I've always had a liking of black outlines due to my ZX Spectrum graphics). How do you think it's going?

Pixel Art / Re: C+C Darth Vader WIP

Yeah not bad, but...
Remember that Vader's whole suit, particularly his, ah, helmet are quite shiny (although it depends what shot how shiny) therefore your image needs more hilites.
Also, hia front chest plate has lights and stuff on it that are coloured.
His feet seem way too small.

Other than that, it's coming on. The idea with the trainers is great.

Yeah, you're edges look far to sharp and defined. Your image doesn't really look like jelly to me, I'm afraid. Just having a look through images of jelly on Google and you'll see what I mean. That's not to say that you don't get sharp edges on jelly, you do, but..well, it's easier to see. I'd even suggest actually buying some jelly from the supermarket (it's not expensive) and making it so you can see first hand.

Pixel Art / Re: New Logo [very much WIP]
« on: December 02, 2010, 09:04:56 pm »
Small amendments. Jaggies fixed on balloon and dinosaur head. Text now larger and positioned in the middle of the image. The main change is the dinosaur's body. It is now done so that his he's almost got his back to you and is looking back over his 'shoulder'. Like the idea of this, but not convinced I've pulled it off, so to speak  :P

I see a couple of jaggies in the balloon, and the back of the head.  Otherwise looks like an ok start to me.

I'll look into the couple of jaggies.  :)
In the meantime, here's a couple of coloured versions. Still not sure about the colours and such yet, but it's late and I'm tired :-\

Pixel Art / Re: Looking for some sprite critique...

Yip, I really like this and it's v. v. good.
I think the ears need a wee bit more contrast to make them standout slightly from the hair as, currently, they just look like part of the hair.
Same with the eyes - they need to stand out more.
Finally, this may seem silly - in the concept art, the legs are slender..but they seem a bit more chunkier and athletic in the pixel version.

Minor things, but keep going, looking forward to seeing the animation.
