General Discussion / how important is drawing skill to pixel art?
« on: May 21, 2012, 02:15:34 pm »
Having recently gotten back into pixel art only to have my laptop die I've had to go back to pencil and paper. I've been trying to do some concept sketches for sprites/characters and they are coming out terrible! With a good reference my sketches can look ok, but still nothing special. When I attempt more creative sketches relying more on imagination it ends up looking far worse. Looking at the creativity sticky I see a lot of you are very talented in other art techniques too, so its got me wondering how far you can really advance in pixel art when you can't draw.

Ps sorry if this is poorly written I'm using my phone on a break at work.

Pixel Art / Re: Walking animation for RPG sprite
« on: May 12, 2012, 03:56:17 pm »
Thanks for the edit, looking closer at my work some of the arms looked more like tentacles :( Ive gone through and tried to clean each frame up, giving the arms especially more form and trying to get them the right proportion. Your edit really helped and hope you dont mind me pinching your palette.

EDIT:
Apparently we're going for a bit of a steampunk setting for the game so I've started working on a character, not sure on it at the moment think I need to do a bit more steampunk research.

Thanks for the feedback, Ive tried to address all the points but not sure if I got the head right still. I also slimmed down the legs and feet a little, just looked too big especially with the perspective I was aiming for. Ive also animated the character I started with which I think looks better than the base, probably simply because I prefer working with clothes than anatomy.

Pixel Art / Walking animation for RPG sprite

Been a long time since I've posted on here :( but I'm back into pixel art again helping a friend out with graphics for a game their working on as a side project for their uni holidays. So far we're tossing around ideas for a setting but instead of sitting idle I started working on a sprite base and walking animation, both pretty rough so far but want to get the basics right before I work too hard on shading.

Here is the spite base and a quick edit I did

and here is the walking animation

I'm not too happy with the perspective / proportions especially when walking but every edit ive tried has made things worse. Just looking for some CC on how to improve it :)

Pixel Art / Re: knight sprite, first attempt at walking animation
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:09:52 pm »
Thanks for the comments, I did deliberately make it a bit slower I had it faster at first and it was hard for me to see any problems with individual frames and I forgot to speed it back up again, I'll give the shoulder movements a go later, I'm guessing I should be keeping it fairly subtle "rotating" the shoulder pad slightly with the arm motion and maybe 1 pixels horizontal motion? I thought I might be able to get away without shoulder motion since armour would be quite restrictive, but I should know by now that when it comes to pixel art the lazy way is rarely the best way.

Edit: Got a chance to do some changes and I've tried to animate a cape but not too sure on it yet so I've put it as a seperate image on here. I tried to animate the highlighting of the chest to represent the shadow of the arm and to hopefully create the illusion of some motion of the upper body.

Pixel Art / knight sprite, first attempt at walking animation -updated
« on: September 26, 2010, 04:03:38 pm »
First of all, I will admit that I have been heavily influenced by a walking tutorial I found through the resources topic on here, http://www.manningkrull.com/pixel_art/tutorials/walking.asp I never copy and pasted anything but it did help me a lot with the legs and I wouldnt know where to begin if it wasnt for that tutorial.

I'm sure there are a fair few things to change but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, since I've barely tried any animation before.

I have no background in art at all, I did gcse art but apart from that it's mostly pixel art.  I wanted to take up art after I left school but my mother refused to let me do art and graphics when I had done soo well in maths and science, so pixelart is just a hobby whilst at university.

1) hadn't really thought about that, will stop doing that now.
2) & 3) I will find some references before redoing them.  I was quite happy with them but now I looked at photos of wood and tiles I realised how far off I was :(
4) Ok, I had looked at one sort of tutorial I found on google, probably missinterpreted it I will look for more
5) will look at the clothes again, I knew they weren't right so will just work

Don't worry about the harsh critique, I joined this site so I could see artist's work and get critique from people who know what they are doing, whereas before I had only relied on friends and people who only knew runescape-pixelart.  Just a shame got soo much reworking to do, and got revision as well so I doubt will finish this challenge in time now

This weeks challenge is to rework the first pixel you submitted to Pixeljoint, however I submitted my first lastnight so instead I'm doing my first ever pixelart (not sure if they will let me enter still but still it's a good challenge I just dont get a ribbon thing).

Main issues I've got are the clothing and Im not happy with my perspective, think its too steep for this scale, but will mean redoing a lot of work  :(.  Also his position doesnt look right, I'm not great at anatomy (bit of an understatement) and I think was a bit ambitious crossing his legs.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Weekly challenge-star fox mock up - Updated!!
« on: January 12, 2008, 08:25:59 pm »

My first ever mock up, the challenge was to make a pixel art version of a 3d game.  I don't have a reference apart from a youtube clip I watched to remind me of the game.

Sorry for such a brief post last night, my gf came round earlier than expected so didnt go into any detail.  This is my first challenge entry for pixeljoint. Like I said most of it was done by memory and from looking at a youtube clip.  Im not too sure on my tiling and the "3D" background (Ive not done much isometric work and this is the first time tried to do tiles) but I feel the tiles fit in fairly well and dont look too tiled. They are very basic but theres no blatently obvious repitition.  Also the charactors/trees/building dont work as tiles, I was a bit rushed and had trouble with the isometric tiling.

I really enjoyed doing this tho and its got me in the mood for doing more mock ups, but since I have exams next week it will have to be put on hold (along with various unfinished projects :( )

Pixel Art / isometric self portrait
« on: January 09, 2008, 05:18:12 pm »
There's been a bit of a trend of portrait topics lately, and I've noticed there are lots of cool styles on here and all the self portraits I've done have been fairly plain and generic so I tried experimenting a bit and after coming across a isomorphic tutorial I decided to attempt an isomorphic self portrait.  This is my first isomorphic picture too so was a bit of a challenge and there are a few bits Im not happy with (nose especially) and I'm not sure if I've done all the highlights in true isomorphic style. Also I'm itching to break up the large spaces, mainly the hair, but I think it would ruin the style of the pic.  Once I'm happy with it I will probably use it as my avatar.
