EGA doll (retina-burning colors ahead)

on: January 22, 2007, 02:33:49 am
What do you get when you combine the bright happy style of the dolling community with the blaring colors of the EGA palette? :D

It's my first attempt at heavily restricted colors. I used all palette colors except the greens. The result is well.... colorful?

Maybe if you stare at it long enough you'll start to see pastels.  :D

The leather parts are awesome.
She looks like an alien. She'd be cool with, like, some antannae.
Ditto on how cool it is when people use EGA well.

Thanks for the comments, guys! I'm glad you like it.  :-*

She's not necessarily supposed to be an alien... I just tried to make her stylized and cute, "doll-like" if you will... and somehow make it work with those colors. I guess the combination of those do make her a bit freaky.

That's looking awesome. I really, really like what you did with the colours. I also think this might be one of the first dolls I have ever liked the look of. Nice work with the textures and folds in the clothing too.

*in agreement*

Despite the burning of my retinas it is really a lovely piece of work. you've made the EGA pallet work very well within it.

Lovely. Only crit is that the outlines of the skin are light compaired to the clothing. I believe the blue would work better, as the gray gives a blurry/pillowy effect.

Yeah, I did try it with both actually. I liked the fact that the blue was darker, but I thought the saturation of it was too overwhelming. It almost made her skin seem even more saturated, whereas the gray seemed to tone it down a bit. So then I decided to go with the gray.  ;)

I'm also in love with the leather, wayuki. :)

No major crits from yours truly.

Excellent effort. Sadly the skin tone can't be helped much more (unless you 50% dither it like in the edit I'll upload soon), this is the EGA, this is what can be done with it. Congratulations on this experiment. Do you find you've learned from restricted palette usage?

EDIT:

as you can see, this is extremely painful a way to work.

Thank you! I think I learned a lot about how different colors work and mix together. I also felt using a palette like this was an interesting challenge rather than an inconvenient restraint. :y:

I did a few different versions of the face before starting the rest of the doll, and for one version I did actually dither in gray and yellow. I think it looks good from a little distance, but from close up I think it looks unpleasantly grainy. Especially with a cutesy character like this, I preferred the smoother look even if it meant a weirder skin tone.

God damn, this is beautiful..  :y: and Helm aka Simon (runs ) showed some sick technique to push the skin tone color further.

I think you need to remove that blue highlight on the shirt.
It really seems odd. Like latex.
But I love it completly.
