Pixel Art / Re: Need Help with R.P.G Grass
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:54:02 pm »
A small palette edit:

I opened that image in Photoshop and made a quick palette change. I mainly increased contrast between the shades and added some variations in hue to make the grass look more interesting, the darkest shade is now more like turquoise and the lighter ones tend to yellow-green. I still thing that there are too many details and the way the blades of grass are laid out make the image a bit blurry at standard size, although I still think it looks great at 2x+

You should try making a full mock-up with more tiles to see how it ends. This grass has potential heh

I can't really figure what is wrong with this particular grass, but it looks nice when you look at it 2x, but at 1x (real size) it looks too bright and blurry. My guess is that you tried to put too much detail on it, and since the colors are quite soft, the lack of contrast blends the details too much at 1x. I'm not to sure on how to improve that one in particular, you can try improving contrast, tweaking the palette or maybe trimming some detail.

General Discussion / Re: Need a little help.

I think I can help you with some pointers, Arctic. Oh, and welcome! Pixel art is very enjoyable, I'm sure that if you dedicate enough time you'll find it quite rewarding.

1) Start small: Don't make a 640 x 480 line art for your first pixel art, it's going to make it difficult for you to color and add detail. You can stick to a smaller size at first to get the hang of it. Then you can experiment with bigger stuff.
2) Use a solid, clean line art: I don't remember who, but someone said here in this board that a broken line art would make a great coloring job not good. The line art is the foundation of the piece, so make sure it's clean and tweaked before attempting to color & detail it. There are other methods to make pixel art pieces, like sculpting the image from color blocks or defining a silhouette first with pure black or other dark color and then adding highlights, but the line art is the basic, most used method for sprites. Find something that suits your style. If you're not sure about the lines you got, you can always upload them and post here for comments and suggestions.
3) Try doing tuts or coloring others' line arts: There's a great bunch of tutorials linked http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=222.0 (also a whole load of tools and interesting links, check 'em out if you haven't) and you can always take a look at the line art thread http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=499.0 where you can see lots of great examples of clean, good line art and you can even feel free to try coloring one of those!

I hope these small tips offer you the help you're looking for Arctic. Good luck!

Challenges & Activities / Re: Commercial Critique Suggestion Thread

That Shadow of the Beast looks... Well, some of the screens look like crap, too little contrast for such interesting organic designs. I think I'll vote for Shadow of the Beast. I've never played Amiga games in my life and I've seen some great pixel graphics there. This game should prove interesting to take a look at for someone like me (and I guess I'm not the only one who grew playing NES and few old PC games, so Amiga is new uncharted territory).

DoDonPachi is awesome, I would have voted for that one but that Shadow... Well, it's screaming "re-make me!!"

See ya.

Thanks for helping me with this Dhaos.

I assume with your suggestion #1 you mean the height of the ear. I assume I should shorten it from the bottom as to make the head feel more three dimensional right? (correct me if I'm wrong). As for number 2 I get that one and I think you're definitely right with that one. And #3 and #4 are also quite easy to see, I notice the lip thing you point there. I'll see what can I do based on those suggestions and I'll post the result soon. Thanks a lot for the help!

See you!

I think this is a very nice piece, very solid overall, the colorful palette works really well and kinda takes me back to the colorful 16-bit era :) ah those days...

Anyway, aside from some things Dhaos and mccow28 mentioned the only thing that I think needs my crit is the darkest shade you used, the selout in some places, like the stone for instance, look kind of broken. You might try toning this down a little bit to smooth things out a bit more, although it's not a big deal, this piece has a lot of contrast and texture thanks to the dithering so it's not that big of a deal.

I love it! :)

UPDATE: Upon further inspection and looking more and more to it at 1x I think it's nothing of a deal at all, it looks good enough, I was checking the piece with a lot of zoom so you can forget my crit. Good job! I need to inspect it more carefully to see if I find anything else on it.

Double post, sorry, but it's worth it heh (I hope)

I made some edits to my Mafia boss based on some of Dhaos suggestions as well as small tweaks in some pixels. I would love to get some more input before finishing work on this piece. I want to polish this as much as I can before I tackle the other palettes of the challenge.

Also a small animation to show the changes (Old and New identified)

Thanks for the comments Dhaos.

See you all.

Hmm... Upon looking some more at him I think I get you point hehe, his head looks to "flat" when it's supposed to be a bit rotated to the right. I got your point, it looks a bit awkward that you see no sides from the head in the left, it goes straight into the ear and hair when you should see some more of the side of the head to the left (his right). This includes some more of the left side forehead I presume. About the highlight in the eye, well, I'll try checking that out too to see how he looks. I'll try to fix that soon, thanks for pointing it out Dhaos! I'll be sure to put up the update soon enough.

Bye.

This is something quite different from what I've seen recently so alone on that it stands out, and the end result is not only more original, its also quite beautiful. I think Helm's edit make the lips look a lot smoother, but somehow it ended losing some of its charm, maybe it's the fact that she lost the mole? Maybe you can save the mole (make it a bit softer perhaps) and tweak the lips' shading a bit? Also Ptoing's little changes to the AA are a nice addition. The piece is very clean as it is, but in Ptoing's edit it ends looking even more smooth.

Top notch work Panda. Very inspiring! Thanks for sharing.

Pixel Art / [UPDATE] Palette challenge Mafia dude
« on: October 27, 2006, 04:02:59 am »
Hello Pix...

I stumbled upon the palette workshop challenge a couple of weeks ago and I was very interested in giving it a try, so I started with the first challenge and made this one. It's pretty different from my usual type of work, more realistic and less manga like. I'm also not too used to working with these types of predefined palettes so it was pretty tough, I think I managed to make something half decent, but I'd love to hear your crits so I can further improve my skills. This particular piece is screaming to be refined, so any in-depth crits and edits are welcome!

Without further wording, the piece...

The Mafia boss

See you all!

UPDATE: (10/29 - 9:44)

Here's the latest version of the piece:

Changes animation:

Changes (as per Dhaos's suggestions):

  • Widened the left (his right) side of the head 2 px.
  • Corrected the lips to better match perspective.
  • Shortened ear height by 2-3 px for same reason.
  • Added small scar in his right cheek to make the image more interesting (and to use the newly gained blank space for something).
  • Widened neck to make perspective more adequate.
  • Minor tweaks here and there (aa, stray pixels, etc.)

I think this one is almost done, if anyone spots something else or wants to comment on anything be sure to drop a line :)

Thanks a lot Dhaos! Your advice has proven really helpful, I appreciate that you took the time to comment.
