One of my first dabbles in pixel art, which I would love to receive some feedback on :)

Disclaimer: No stereotypical French people were hurt in the making of this piece...

Where is the baguette? Where is the Gauloises? Where is the beret? Why isn't he wearing a striped mime suit?

He actually has a beret on. True, a striped shirt might have been more stereotypical, but the vest and scarf give him a bit more style ;)

I was just kidding, of course.

Still, if I didn't know who he is supposed to be, then I would have said it's an englishman or scot... That button vest and the mustache, you know :)

The back leg on your run animation does something quite odd as it straightens out. Other than that, this looks pretty neat.

It looks like the smoke is a string being swung.  Try making discreet puffs that go up.

Even though I'm French, I've never seen anybody like that here :p To much stereotypical, maybe ?

The beret and the hair are to close in colour and contrast, make his hair brighter maybe?

And in French we use spaces between letters and double punctuation. You should write

C'est la vie !

:p

Good idea animating a skeleton first, a lot of people try to animate the sprite itself, and ends up just moving parts around. Keep up!

Adjusted the smoke.

I guess that's the problem with stereotypes, they're hardly ever true. I've yet to see anyone walk on wooden shoes in my country :P I adjusted his hair color to make it a bit lighter. Here's the newer version of the idle animation:

Hey, I think this all looks great. Your run animation is very dynamic! The arms need work though. I feel your ideal animation can be extended further too. You character should really inhale that cigarette! Give him more of a slow in and slow out or a longer pause as he inhales.

Did some work on a first jumping animation. I also agree with the comments that the arms in the running animation need some work, which is something I'll be looking into next.

There's a couple hitches in the run.

Being a novice at this all, could you add some context to your arrows and boxes? :P

Here's a second version by the way :)

Sure np.

A Hitch is a frame or frames that work against the flow of a motion.
It can be viewed as an error in position.

It's much easier to see with comparison.
Here's a very plain example:

This only matters if it is unintentionally added to an animation --> which happens quite often
You can use them to purposely to create a desired motion.

In your animation it does not appear to be intentional and it does not seem to improve the animation either.

Learn to see hitches in real time as well as frame by frame.

You've fixed them with your new post.  :y:

Re: Stereotypical Frenchman [Updated: Jump/Run Animation]

I started fleshing out the skeleton running animation, because I was pretty happy with it. However, I'm not that happy with how this is turning out so far. Seeing as how his upper legs are only 3 pixels and his lower legs only 2 I'm having some trouble with accurately placing them and how to shape the curves. Anyone willing to share some insights on the topic?
