Pixel Art / Kickboxer sprite and animations
« on: January 20, 2009, 08:02:59 am »
Hi all, long time lurker and occasional poster here, I remember joining this site years ago on a different account and domain. I posted here once about a year ago with some simple 64x64 MMA fighters. I've made ten of them now, and I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two since the last thread. Here is one based on heavyweight MMA fighter Alistair Overeem, who beat Badr Hari, one of the top K-1 Kickboxing stars, in a K-1 Rules match on New Year's Eve.

I started with a kind of victory pose (he is NOT supposed to look like he is throwing a punch):

After that, I decided I wanted to animate him throwing some punches. I tried to make it as true to his real fighting pose as possible:

I started with the basic jab and straight punch. I'm feeling pretty good about my progress so far, but I decided to post here in hopes I can get some general pointers about making these kinds of animations. I'm going for a realistic feel, but I also want to have some visual "pop" to the attacks so it doesn't look too robotic. Obviously I haven't finished these yet, but with no big clothing/jewelry details I felt the core animation was complete enough for critique:

Jab:

Straight:

And a little shadowboxing I threw together:

Any input is very much appreciated, I haven't animated a sprite like this in years, and I was never particularly good at it to be honest

Ok yeah, looks like he cribbed the lines from one and the palette from the other, look at the legs:

Edit: And the head off of another one!

I'll give you this much, you put quite a bit of effort into this.

Copying and pasting stuff isn't the best way to improvement. You didn't even manage to merge some colors that differ a bit.
I had my edit for you, but when I saw what the others did I considered it being useless :P.

Yeah, I noticed that too, and maybe this is just a freaky coincidence, but the shorts on his guy have a very similar color scheme to one of the guys the the thread I posted last week:

Using another image as a starting point is not necessarily a pixel crime in my opinion, but you have to turn it in to your own completely. None of this copy and paste stuff.

EDIT: Ok, now I know why it was a similar looking color scheme, you took the entire palette from my Lyoto piece:

Thanks for the insight. I guess I could've provided a little more information... they're meant to be put in a "cage" background that has lots of lighting and a light colored mat, and I'm aiming for a more realisitc color palette, so the shadows are meant to be pretty soft. Also, these are typically going to be displayed at 2:1 or 3:1, so I'm allowed a little liberty when it comes to making the details work. I do like some of the simplifications you made though, particularly his right forearm, left glove and the plane of shadow on the side of the head. Machida has a very unique stance being a Shotokan Karate practicioner, I'm a big fan of his in particular so I spent a good amount of time perfecting the stance.

Hope this doesn't sound like "criticism resistance", I appreciate the tips

Hello all, I'm a long-time pixel dabbler and I recently decided to get back in the practice, so I was happy to see the old Pixelation forums didn't die after all as I had thought. I'm not really sure if I'm going to do anything with these, but since I'm a big MMA fan I've been practicing by trying to capture some of the better known fighters in pixel form. I decided to use a "scale" of 64x64 pixels so they'd look right if matched up against each other. I consider them pretty much done except for the last one (Penn), but any insight on using anti-aliasing or whatever would welcome.

Lyoto Machida:

Tito Ortiz:

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

B.J. Penn

And here is a belt I made for the forum I post at:

P.S. I'm not really a stickler for color conservation, I've never had a use for it.

I'm not the best critique guy but I will try to contribute to this place, I remember learning a lot from some of the people here
