Mikasa Ackerman - progress thread

on: February 23, 2015, 11:14:10 pm
Hi!

I know you guys are probably fed up with attack on titan, but I just recently started watching it, and Mikasa is definitely my favorite character.
She's badass, cute, sexy, and it doesn't help that she looks almost the same as my ex-girlfriend, which makes watching each episode a "bitter-sweet" experience for me.

So, I decided I should make a sprite out of her, in the style of capcom's new street fighter series.
I'm making it like if she's in the middle of a special attack or something, but its basically what she does in the show.

this is the initial sketch, I'll keep posting more progress as I have it.

there's a few changes I might make. I'd rather have he bend a bit more at the waist, and the face well, I still haven't learn properly how to draw it.

The pose is cool, it's getting there. But it could be even more dynamic. The arms outstretched makes a fine target out of the entire torso and it doesn't look like she'd be able to do anything useful with those swords at a split second notice. I'd twist the torso so that her right sword is held further behind and ready to swing. That would make more sense with the forward leap too I think.

Good sketch, only thing I notice anatomy-wise is that the right arm looks too long.

I found that this is the most common frame used before an attack in Attack on Titan, though if you are sticking with this pose, I do agree that bending more at the waist is a good idea

Edit: used wrong img

I took erekt's sugestion and gave it a try

I don't like that I can't clearly show the right arm, so I might do another one with a much more opened pose, but with a rotated torso like this one

OK this is my take on it. Torso rotated, agressive face, and the arms opened but it guard and attack pose.

I like this.

Dude, don't make a man post a picture of his ex, that's rough stuff.  :ouch:

New pose looks great. Looks plausible to go for that canonical slash they do. Interested to see it in sprite form :D

I really like the new pose too, though she looks a tad too angry.
My opinion is that  more along the lines of here with the mouth a bit smaller might be better.

Thanks yaomon, I''ll use that as reference.

so I went ahead and flat colored the drawing.
I prefer doing this to line art because line art takes much more time, and since I'm mostly worried about pose rather than detail now, its just quicker for me to do

I'll add one or two shades of a specific color so I can render the volume (like the right arm and interior of the jacket)

A bit more progress. again, I'm trying to stick close to the street fighter alpha shading style.

Will try and post more updates today still

Great going on the pose :y: I think you can be much bolder on contrast, it will make the shading process easier too. If you want to keep the soft contrast you can always revert to it later?

Crap my bad, it was supposed to be "jk. Big fan of AoT here, can't wait to see more" on second paragraph, accidentally edited them out...

Shouldn't she be a little paler? She's looking a little orange right now. Other than that it's coming along nicely.  :y:

And this is the "final" sprite.
I've made an indexed color version so that I could try different pallets, and for kicks I also did one with 15+transparency (on the right) with shared colors.

I've put the sprite on the a background from street fighter alfa but wasn't very happy with the result, so I played a bit around with the levels, so see if I could make it stand out more.

Her left leg isn't reading too well, I thought that was a stump. (sorry not familiar with the show). Maybe if you angle the lower leg down 15 degrees it might make for a better silhouette.

If you're going for SFA look, you'll need to work on the outlining a bit more, especially around the jacket and boots. If you look at sakura there, she has sel-out on the majority of her sprite, except for the bandana and her SNK hair.

I went ahead and changed the leg. I also insisted a bit more on the outline, even though I don't like adding colors when I'm happy with the amount :) but oh well, its for a good reason

and here they are in a background I did ages ago in this very forum:
