[WIP] Pogo-Mech. Critique please.

on: June 02, 2010, 08:40:47 am
I made a little... whatever it is, and tried to limit my colors a bit.
I first worked from the little one, and then scaled it up. I might try and go a bit bigger.

(It's either a tank, a space ship, or some odd looking pogo-stick... or something else entirely.)

Whatever it is, I'd appreciate feedback. :)

EDIT: Stupid grammatical errors. I must remember, its is possessive.  :-[

EDIT: Progression. (First three are general representations, I didn't actually save them.)

I think I prefer the middle one, because the smallest one uses too much black within the sprite. I do prefer the shape of the first one though. Try to use less black on the inside of the sprite, as it will flatten it and remove possible detail.

Thanks Xelados, I agree! I'm not sure how I would improve the smaller one, but I tried to add more details to the large one to remove that plastic look.

Sure thing Larwick, I'll remove some of the black. I'll see what I can do about the shape.

For now, how is this, comparatively?

The new one looks even more pillowshaded than the first one and lacks contrast overall. Keep the first one!

Thanks for the comment, Mush, I tried to mess with the shading a bit to fix it.

Is it less pillow shaded now?

Right... a pogo-mech. :P

(I've had an infinite amount of suggestions and ideas, ranging from turrets and jetpacks to helmets.)

Larwick: I'm not sure. I might do nothing, or I might use them for a game of some kind. I might make my own or I might use it as some add-on content.

I just wanted to explain my excuse reason for using pillow shading, I wanted to use white as sort of a secondary color. When you use actual shading, or at least when I do, I lose that effect.

-->

To combat this, I think I'll add a second color. I've worked on some examples and they look pretty good so far, so I'll post them in a bit. Plus pink looks a little bland/girly anyway.

It's a good idea, but if you want to preserve color identity without resorting to pillow shading, just make sure to have bigger areas of that one color that you want to show the most. Make the highlights smaller, for example. Man, I can't seem to find the words right now D: Anyhowsa, argh! You're the master of the lighting and surfaces of your own work so you can always tweak it into working.

On the other hand, your pillow shading is definitely good looking. It's not the 'pillow shading' awful practise of drawing a bunch of pixel bands at the edge of the sprite, but just smooth shading from the front. You're in the OK <3

You know what, you're right!
Why did I say that? :P

BAM!!

Anyhow, I feel the need for speed hue!

Yes, I'm as indecisive on color as I am on the name. :P

heh.  I'm just waiting for an actual animator to rip it apart and tell my why it sucks... that happens here a lot.  it's quite endearing, actually.  :-[
anyways, critique.  that's what we're here for...

I love the colors because the pink was making me think of bubble gum and barbie, thus getting on my nerves.
is my favorite, the contrast works well.
but!
the smaller versions don't seem to accurately represent the larger things, becoming more triangular and making some things smaller in proportion, which they shouldn't be.  like the muffin top thing should be much bigger and take up more room, making the pogo bit smaller.  And why aren't the smaller ones completely highlighted?  :n:
edit:

(Click-zoom to see changes more clearly)
Point clear?  I didn't do a really good job on the littlest one, it was hard =\
hope I could help
later, mate
happy pixeling. peace

Awww, no! the animation is great!
Infact, it inspired me to attempt my own animation.

But yeah, I was sort of neglecting the smaller versions... I'm fixing that now. :)

Winning colors!

Cherry Red, Orangey Brown, Dark Purple, and Dark Royal Blue!

Oddly enough...

:I I have to say, I loved the idea of a PINK pogo-mech.
Just the irony of a girly colour and something so freakin' awesome made me fall head over heels.
; A ; ah, but now it's got normal 'manly' colours. flair is gone.
