Ditto to what AA said... with regards to my example, you only want to dither/gradiate on one side of the block of color, buy mountains are so jagged, you can choose not to dither at all, instead using pointy shapes like AA showed in his example.

I'm a girl... :O
I already colored these lines, but in case someone else wants a go at 'em.

The structure of the mecha looks great, but I would scrap the shading so far... I can't even tell where the light source is.

Here's some refs for some cel-shaded mechas: http://www.mediafactory.co.jp/anime/gravion/about/mecha.html

Yeah, I also encourage you to consider edits, sometimes you may not be inclined to try a critique, but when someone else does it, it pops up at you and you're like, oh!, I see what he means!  I understand your stance however, though I think it would serve you better to approach everything you post here from a "how much can I learn here?" attitude that would benefit you in everything else you do rather than a "how can I make this specific piece better?" attitude.  In other words:  I think it is in your best interest to consider anything that might be valuable for improving all of your work in the futere, rather than sacrificing potential new ideas or techniques merely to save the integrity of one piece.

Of course, like I said, I understand you stance, and if you still don't want edits, that should be respected.

As for the piece:  I like this a lot.  I think you should work on the shape of the tail and the long spiky teeth.  Now they don't seem to curve and sharpen like they should, they are kind of blocky.  Also, I think the further hooves could have one lighter shade.  His rear right foot seems sloppily done.  Perhaps a little of the highlight on the mid torso would bring out more volume.

I see your guys' point about letting others edit my pixels.  I guess it never occured to me that I could just look at the edits instead of collabing on a piece. >_-.  If anyone reads this: I don't mind if people do edits to my pixels from now on.  I actually think it's really interesting to see other's interptretations, and I can always use help!

And thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll post an updated sprite when I make the changes.

This would probably be really complicated to implement, but I think it would look really cool if the refection of the glass moved as the character moved...?

It looks a little short for a snake.  Plus, snakes have this awesome scaly, shiny texture that would be really fun to pixel, but this snake looks so matte... like it's made out of cloth. http://k43.pbase.com/u4/bardofbyte/large/752775.snake.jpg

Pixel Art / Mirrored Tree and Girl Fighter
« on: March 10, 2007, 11:29:47 pm »
I decided to put these two in the same topic so I'm not spamming up the forums.

Mirrored Tree..4 hours (ignored the mirrored pallette in the corner :P)
11 colors including transparency

Fighter Girl... 2.5 hours
16 colors including transparency

Both are from sketches I produced.  I shrunk 'em down and reduced the colors to create a base shape to work from.  I've taken them about as far as I can go for today, but feedback is useful! ^^

Oh man... mountains!  I've totally struggled with mountains.... so I made a little a little mini-tute.  First though, try to remember that mountains are shaped sort of like jagged pyramids connected together, not like cones!

1. Draw the peaks.
2. Decide your light source.
3. Draw some natural-looking zig-zags down the peak as guidelines for shading. Fork them now and then.
4. Using the light source as your guide, shade on the opopsite of the guides.  Make the shading gradually lighter (I used gradients, you can dither) as you reach the next guideline.
5. Repeat this technique with smaller lines to add more details.

I like it!  I was looking for crits, but I can't really think of any...  I guess I would just make the feet a little more defined?
