Roman and Gaul sprites.

on: March 18, 2007, 05:24:31 pm
Two sprites I thought of while I was in bed!
I'm not as happy with the barbarian as I am with the Roman.. but yeah.. these are my first real sprites.
That's why I need some tips to improve my spriting!
Critisize away!

looks good. I never really like the small sprites. Perhaps you can make them bigger.

Looks to me like the roman soldier had a lot of plate mail on. In reality, they had some plate mail, but a lot of it was studded leather.

I tried to make the Roman armour look more like the actual Roman armour. : )

The barbarian really doesn't read very well at 1x.  It's a little better at 2x, but it's still rather muddled.  One problem with how it reads is that the axe is really close in value to the pants, and sort of blends into them, forming one big shape that continues halfway up the torso.  The hair is also very similar to the skin, which causes it to blend in.  If you choose colors that are more different, the different parts should read better as different parts.  Cleaner shading as opposed to the dithering you have right now might help too.

The roman reads much better, mostly since it has simpler forms that are distinctly colored and isn't overlapping itself with lots of stuff.

Cool sprites; I look forward to seeing an update.

This is really cool. It has that little touch that small sprites usually have, it reminds me a lot of Ultima. Make more please!

About the roman:

The shield has so much space for development! Their shields are a lot more elaborate than that.

Barbarian:

His stance seems kind of awkward to hold such a large axe. Either make the axe smaller, or have him hold it with two hands. Barbarianize him a little too! Make him look more fierce than just standing around.

Just some ideas  :)

I gave the Roman an illustration on his shield that he should like.
I made the barbarian hold his axe with two hands and changed the design of the axe.
I also tried to make him look more barbaric!
His hair has another colour, too!

I hope it's an improvement.

Wow, what an improvement.  I couldn't really tell what the barbarian was supposed to look like before.  And I like the new shield.

Little pixel soldiers are the best!

The roman is great. You may want to play around a bit with the palette of the barbarian (vary hue, saturation, lightness or specific key colors)  so it reads as well as it should. Increase contrast, as in the hair, and pants. (Not shown on edit :P)

Oh yeah, that looks a lot better.  I can tell at a glance that he has long gray hair, green pants, no shirt, and is holding a big axe.  Huge improvement.  The roman soldier looks nicer as well; I like the new shield design.  Good stuff!

Haha! I love your edit, Turbo. : P

Upped the contrast in the barbarian his hair and added a nifty gladiator!
