The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread

on: November 28, 2005, 02:06:04 am
Hey all.

I guess someone dropped the ball here, since there hasn't been an OT thread for a while.

So here it is. Talk it up.

And oh yeah, I claim first post.

There's only about 9 or 10 of them that I wear constantly though and every now and then I wear one of the others. I realized that khaki, yellow and orange colored shirts don't look great on me after I ordered a lot of them. I seem to go best in darker colors. Of the Dead, Moby Was a Consumer, Release, all of them are <3 My favorite shirt is still You Sank My Battleship though. Heather gray is the only light color I like.

So... how about that weather? It was -40 degrees Farenheit this morning. My car didn't want to start, so I took the bus. Nothing sucks more than riding that bus.

Happy birthday, Rox!  I don't have a pretty picture for you, but then again, I don't have a pretty picture for me either :-P  As a matter of fact, I don't have any pictures recently...I need to pixel more.  In other news, you're 8 days older than me; my birthday's next Wednesday and I'll be 19 as well.

Why is it that people think that to show respect to minorities they must disrespect majorities?  I’ll give you two examples, in most stores this year as you’ve probably heard are afraid of using the word Christmas, so they call them Holiday lights and Holiday trees…  90% of the pop celebrates Christmas…  Yet I've never seen a Holiday Menorah… The second example is in my school; at school they have an African American Club, a Hispanic American Club, and an Asian American Club.  With African heritage month posters, Hispanic Heritage posters and Asian Heritage posters, also in gym during run time they only play rap music.

Yeah, that's pretty racist. Why can't white people listen to rap? What about rap would make it black music? I'm white, and I listen to rap. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't.

And white history month? If history was equally portrayed from the point of view of all minorities, then there wouldn't be a need for black history month, or asian history month, etc. Unfortunately, it's not, and that's why. I don't think one month is enough, I think history should just be portrayed as history happens. Don't whitewash history.

And there already is a white american club. It's called the Ku Klux Klan.

I know you didn't mean to sound as racist as you did, but think before you post.

Now, I may sound harsh, but I don't really tolerate racism. I'm not really calling you out, or anything, but I want to get to the root of this...

You say that 90 percent of people celebrate christmas, so we should call them "christmas lights." Well but then aren't you contradicting yourself? I mean, you say since there aren't really minorities anymore, we shouldn't have to be so politically correct?

I have to you agree with you on one level. I think that in a lot of cases, people can get carried away with political correctness. However, I don't think anyone can say "Most of us celebrate Christmas, so forget about the rest." That's not why America was founded, and that's not what Christianity was founded on.

MR, I understand what you're trying to say, I think, but it came out really racist.

No what I was simply saying is people need to stop being so stupid.  It's not the minorities that complain it’s the few stupid people from the majorities that think they complain without consenting any person from the minority.

I'll agree on the "political correctness is sometimes blown out of proportion" point.  Here's an example of overdone political correctness: at a "holiday" party at my school way back in 8th grade (I think), they had decorations representing Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and something else (I've forgotten what), but there were no traditional Chrismas decorations.  If that's not overdone political correctness, I don't know what is :-P  Also, the people I know who are most against affirmative action are black; they say that they would rather get a job, scholarship, school admittance, or whatever because they deserve it, not because they're black.  Personally, I agree with them.

Oh, and I don't know anything about curvilinear perspective ;-)

I'll top that Rox, Religion sucks =D

Religion...Patrotism, all those things that create attachments and loyalities for the hell of it. I respect every Prophet of a given religion, but not the religions, religions always get fucked over when the prophet dies and become a means for control.

I dont say Religious or patriotic people suck, but I think it's wrong to place your faith in meaningless rituals and icons, if you want to belive in something higher then go right ahead, but dont attach that to a group of society.

it's the only reason we've ever had wars.

This whole political correctness thing just proves how fucking clueless we are, it's not about being all touchy about your own beliefs and struggling for attention for your own little niche fixation, it's about seeing BEYOND that, it's about seing how they all connect and what each of them say comes from the same place, they're all trees from the same seed that grow in diferent ways.

I read "WTFever" as "what fever?" Then for some reason I immidiately realized that I always hear about the avian flu scare in obscure places, but have never heard or seen anything about it on the news and I've never met anyone who's been caught up on the subject. It's like the whole SARS scare. The only reason I figured out about that in the first place was because of a Threadless shirt where I was like "Hmm... wonder what the hell this is about." Then I found out SARS survival rate and was even more like "WTF? SARS is the weak  overweight dweeb of the virus family."

And I saw Just Friends. Cookie cutter plot, but still hilarious. Especially the whole hockey game scene.

Anyone here read zombie livejournals?
http://www.livejournal.com/users/themagestorm/ I really like this one. It's been going on for over a year now, although it's been a little slow as of late. Do yourself a favour if you're going to click, and immediately click on archives. don't read the first post at the top as you will get some major spoliers.

Basic plot is the main character is a handicap, ex-military guy, who is sitting at home alone when the apocalypse comes. It has  interesting zombie dissection entries that pop up from time to time.

http://www.tacticalunderground.us/ This one is a book now, so you can only read the first month. It's really awesome though and I heartily recommend it.

http://www.sothisisacomic.com/Zombie/zomb3.html zombie infection simulator :)

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a jam....

It seems I might need a place to stay for a little bit, wheather it be roomates, or sleeping on a couch, I don't know yet. I don't know how much time I have either before I have to leave where I'm at, heck, I don't even know for sure weather I need to leave or not. I don't really want to go into the intimate details of all this, but I'm trying to exhaust all resources I may have. Anyway, if you can help, please let me know, I'm sure we can work something out.

Note: This isn't for those of you who are under 18, that would just be too weird.

I would let you live with me, Dogmeat, but I'm in Alaska and I don't have my own place. That'd be strange to live with another pixel artist anyway. They'd know how lazy I was and would learn that when I told people "I have other real life stuff to handle" I really would mean "But Family Guy is on..." And they'd see my countless sketchbooks and be like "Oh, you draw?" And then they'd see that I've only completely filled one of them ever because I had to. For an art class I hated. Then I'd feel stupid and would want to lock myself in my room, but I don't have a door.

I'm rambling.

I'm just seenig what my options are, it's hard for a 26 year old guy, who has been independant since he was 15, to have to call his parents and ask them if he can come live with them, but when you hit bottom, you have nothing left to loose.

I like to think I'm decent at composing.  Most of my stuff has been choral, but I've written a couple of instrumental pieces.  What's the project, what exactly do you want, what style are you looking for, etc.?

I can make drum beats. That's all. I should try messing around with composing more. I should just play music more. My bass hasn't been touched in months. Partially due to breaking my left wrist, mostly due to laziness.

The project of mine is a puzzle game, I'd be looking for some nice title screen music as well as a handful of other tracks for the different stages in the game (maybe 5 total), and another track for completeing a level or for any waiting room parts(in between playing).

As for a specific genre of music, im not familiar with the different types, I'd have to hear it, it needs to just sound good :P
I can probably try and find example of other music that I like if it would help..
Intro/Title music: Kinda "uplifting", "up beat", "here we go!"
Stage Tracks: not too slow, not too fast(needs to be fitting of a puzzle game).
Waiting music: Kinda calm, like all is well.

Do you need it to be default MIDI music? Or could it be any music in the MIDI format? Because I can make music in the midi format, but it's not just the default midi instruments (I don't think.)

I'll check on that, but I'd be interested.

I have FLStudio4, so I'm not sure how that whole midi thing works out. Maybe you make the song with default samples, and then it is somehow converted into a .midi file. I'll test it now and post soon...

I mean, I'm no composer, but I can make some music. It all depends on how complicated you want it.

I do know that robalan is talented, so if he can do it, choose him over me. But if something were to fall through with robalan, I could do it.

Heh, thanks for the vote of confidence, Evan.  I've used FL, but I have found that it's better for things with loop-based sampled music rather than MIDI.  The piano roll on that is no fun to use, at least in my limited experience.  I much prefer Cakewalk or Sibelius for writing music.  Sibelius is my tool of choice at the moment, mostly because it makes stuff look pretty.  However, since this will not need sheet music to be printed and thus has no need to be pretty looking, I might use Cakewalk, since I enjoy the scrub tool :-P

I'll try to get something put together over break; I'll probably make one track to verify that it sounds like what you want, and if it's satisfactory go from there.  So yeah.  Time to go listen to puzzle game music to get an idea of style.  The only puzzle game music I can remember off the top of my head is Tetris XD  Depending on how many breaks I take during studying, I might get a track done in the next week or so, but I'll definitely have time after finals.

[EDIT]Oh, and a question.  I would like to know a bit about what style of puzzle game it is.  For example, does the music want to be spooky, carribbean, classical music, oriental sounding, what?  That's what I meant by style in the earlier post.[/EDIT]

Hmmm...  Can't say I'm familiar with the program.  A quick google search reveals that it looks like the MS Paint of the MIDI making software world, but having not used it, I can't make a real statement for it one way or the other.

[EDIT]And here's a quick sample of my music; this is something I put together in the past hour or so.  Perhaps it could be menu music?  Or it could be for a level.  Or it could be nothing at all like what you had in mind, which is why I'm posting something before putting too much work into it :-P  Anyway, the file.

Know what I miss? Gameboy. Before it could fold, before its backlighting or its fancy rechargable battery. Back in the day when it was vertical, took four batteries, had four colors and a contrast wheel. I hate these new 3D handhelds. They seem so cold. Maybe I'm just getting too old for games. Maybe I've got too many memories of Donkey Kong and Pokémon that I can't fully appreciate the newer games. Lately though, I've just been completely unable to even look at my DS. Maybe I just don't have the kind of games I like. After all, Nintendogs is only interesting for so long, it only kept me interested for three days. I find myself going to Fred Meyer's and often buying games at random in hopes that I find a rare gem that lives up to the fun and entertainment that the old Gameboy games offered, but I have yet to find one to do so other than Harvest Moon and Metroid Fusion. On the other side of the coin, maybe I've just bought too many games in my time. I may have too many posessions to care for many of them anymore.

I think I'm going to find a niche in the Gameboy homebrew community or something. I miss that battery draining brick of excellence.

Goodbye childhood, and happy early birthday to me.

Don’t worry Blick I got that same feeling when I saw all of my old N64 games from my childhood in a clearance bin, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, SSB, 1080, StarCraft 64, Starfox 64, and Cruisin USA... Those and when I saw the 10th Year Anniversary of Toy Story DVD.  10 YEARS!  Sigh... I miss those days when Tetris has 4 colors... when I would run around trying to get enough light to play, then the sun would move and I would get glare... I spent my entire last 4 months of Algebra playing gameboy.  Yet now I got the DS and Xbox.  Blick just do some research before you buy random games.  Also mod, it can add so much to so little.  I found amazing games that no one would ever buy like Indigo Prophecy and Polarium.  Both very satisfying, very satisfying.  Oh and never ever get Harvest Moon Snes… It will suck you in like nothing else.  It kept me to my room for 48 hours peeing in cans and paying people to bring me food.  (Its like crack and Pringles once you pop you just can't stop)  Then the game was over and life went on.  What I am trying to say is don’t just buy a game and play the hell out of it.  Play it in shifts so the fun lasts a long time.  Also don’t buy games like the Metal Slug 4 & 5 set, beat it 100% in 2 hours, both games.  Normal people would still beat it in a hour and 20 mins with no bonuses.  Sigh, its like games are getting easier…  I get the feeling sometimes Blick but that is why they made mods and online play.

Well, I do some research on games. The only game I ever bought without ever hearing about it before was P.N.03 for GC, which ended up being strangely addictive. I mean, for a game that's basically the same levels in a different layout, it got me hooked.

With GBA games these days, buying them is like a drug. I need to find that game that's like the first great one. I'll hear about a game that's decent or a rare gem and not really much more on it and months later I'll see it on the shelf and say to myself "Hey, it's only $30, might as well get it... and this other one... and maybe this one." Then I go home and am entertained for a week or two until I pick them up again and try to play from the start and get rehooked for a week or two. Actually, I just started a little relapse of sorts with Metroid Fusion a few days ago.

The fact that they keep releasing Pokemon games is really killing me. I keep buying them. I didn't buy the two newest GBA ones, but I bet I eventually will. For the nostalgia factor. I always do. Looking at the original Gameboy games I still have, 4 out of 8 of them or Pokemon and I have Sapphire for GBA. I miss fifth grade a lot, apparently.

...hey dude... man i got this great idea....
..what?...
...we make like a big yellow bird...
..sweet...
.we can call it big bird.
../...Yeah../...
..and we can have a count..
...that counts!...
.i love it dude.
..lets do it...

SpongeBob was slightly different, a girl and 2 guys smoking weed...

ha rox,

I live in SF, the capitol of homosexualism, gay people IMHO are quite pleasant to talk with, though in my case, it may help that I'm a cute man, but in my experiences I have yet to meet a mean gay person. The lesbians on the other hand always give me dirty looks, but that's their problem.

Seriously, I'm sorry you're having housing troubles or whatever, and I wish you the best of luck with your job interview, but don't assume that you have the right to be an ass. You're no better than any other person on this earth.

alright, you 2 need to stop acting like adults !!! it was a friggen joke, amongst friends, but I think it was blown way out of context and taken too seriously. If egg had made a joking reference to helm and I being lovers because we were both white guys, I would think it was funny, but maybe my sense of humor is extremely warped. Egg, if I have offended I'm sorry, mercury, same goes for you sizzlechest.

Hmm, yes... I like cats.  They are so much like me.  No I am not like cats; cats are like me.  Cats lay around all day like me, they eat from a container, they couldn't really couldn’t care what people around them are doing like me, you must earn their respect and love not like some stupid dog like me, they even lick themselves and release their waste material in sandboxes like me...  Wait... Forget that last comment...  Anyway at danger of starting an animal flame war I have a dog too.  Just to make you people happy, also because my parents don’t believe in locking the doors or paying for the security system so they have a hebetudinous dog bark at intruders but that is frightened of cats…
Hebetudinous means mental lethargy… stupid vocab tests.

Well, I did support you before Zolth but not now.  After that stunt you deserve to get beaten with a sharpened belt buckle or a touraco and forced to listen to zydeco music.

It seems fairly obvious to respond that forum activity has gone down because it's concentrated here. *Looks at Zolthorg*

I finished my secret santa the day I got it.. well.. I am considering doing another. I can never tell when I've done enough for someone.

While double posting in the OT is mildly amusing, it seems that time could be better spent pixeling (your secret santa??) than making jokes people may not get which end up causing loads of friction. Hopefully it's all settled now... either way, I'm going to set a prohibition on the OT threads for a while, or when there's more board activity. If you're too lazy to pixel, don't hold your breath on the OT. ;)
