Maby youve lost so much time, becouse you didint start properly from the begining :)
Shape pf ypur axe reminds me much more the music instrument than weapon...

If you mind it from begining, its all right, but if that would be weapon from the begining it have to look like thing for hurting people. Weapon suppose to be not a toy.
Im newbee in the pixelart, but maby you need sometimes few steps back, becouse in my opinion you spent so much time for colour all axe, witch is very nice, byt you didint think about shape of this weapon.
Quick edit, hope it will help you. Its not perfect, but probalby looking more like a weapon
 

Copule of days before ive been visiting some middle age castle, here is one of my pictures taken in there. There are some axes from middle age used for the knights movie several ears ago. Maby it would be helpful for also another future works with axes.

Looks much better :) But im also thinking that you have to work more for teeths, couse this dither all over makes them very flat.

Ive made it couse i was thinking itlbe bether for more smooth steps between colours. Ech, long road before me :) To learn and make it properly :) Thanks for edit, ill examine it.

If youre looking for good reference try to look for screens of gobliiins game. Its very old, very stylish masterpiece pixel art. Probably this is what youre looking for.

In my opinion, itisnt bad after all. i dont know exaclty what sort of species is this skull, but if you created it from your mind its your idea. Simple human skull has special shape, try to look at michaleanglo first drawings you will see the shape.

Try to avoid of useing black colour as a part of the drawings. Deep black colour is always a hole in the picture. If you would examine color of the shadow of the things youwill see that its always have some sort of colour. Deeper darker colour the deeper hole will be looking.
Hope my word are understandable, im still practicing.

Ive made quick edit of your work, and some palete orders to use less colours. Id used GIMP

Its not perfect but itll help you get something clear that i was talking about.

Very interesting, those hair are very impresive, but those curly part they suppose to be some futuristic things on the future, like... Malczewski "meduza"

im very glad that you also liked those lowres Furrytails, in the near future i was thinking about some small 3-4 picture short comic stories with this haracter.
