Thanks for the ideas, Tourist! I had tunnel vision until I saw those. Also, I really like the idea of plants turning; I was actually going to have the roses in the second tileset blossom as he gets near them.
Yeah, the character is supposed to be a representation of the sun. Originally I thought he could just run around and light up stuff, but I just thought of this possible interesting game mechanic involving a moon, so I'll implement that and see how it works out.
You're right, I did make him too stiff. I have a better design in mind for him, but I'll keep it simple.
This is the first time I've attempted tiles, so I'm not sure how to make the tiling less obvious. Well actually I can fix the third set, but in general, how would you go about constructing a tileset?
Thanks for the edit Cicadas :) I wanted to make him less square but wasn't sure how. I'll post a new character design and some updated tiles soon.

Hey guys, I'm back  :) Right now I'm just attempting something small to get a better grasp on programming, so I'm trying to keep it simple.



Screenshots:





The backgrounds are extreme WIP. In the second screenshot he's standing over water; I'll add a reflection when I finally get my hands on Flash 5. I used a partially transparent yellow rectangle over the bg in the third one to convey what the atmosphere should be like.

So I'm frustrated with the palettes and style. They look okay for each individual tile, I think, but collectively the game doesn't have a defining look to it.
Also, I want to stray away from the Cave Story look but I'm not sure how to give the player sprite more character.

His feet shouldn't be moving at all unless he's on ice or something ???
The punch looks weak. I think this post might help in terms of creating momentum.

Ahmahgawd I finally got around to working on this again.
After much indecision I decided to just stick with the original style, mostly to keep the animation simple and my sanity intact. I did try dulling down the white highlights but she ended up looking flat ... Yeah. Buuut I really appreciate your edits since it was a great learning experience for me as a pixel artist :D

I sped it up in lieu with Mike's edit while still keeping some of the floatiness. (I also just realized that I had no idea what he said about being on 1s. Can anyone clarify?) The highlights I didn't move up and down too much for practical ingame reasons. I centered the highlight on her head a bit more and will do the same for the walk cycle. I also hueshifted a little more.
Edit: Did the same for the walk cycle.

Proportionally his knees should be higher, about halfway down the whole leg. Is he kneeling?
He looks really tense; lower his shoulders a little.
If you want him to be muscular, then his chest should be more prominent and his legs more built.

Sorry, I overreacted as well. It just irritated me to see someone needlessly lose their temper because we should be a welcoming community here.
Even though it's the internet, that's not a good excuse for being rude. My point is that although yes, he overreacted, we should also take some responsibility for initially attacking him without good reason.

The second one is easier on the eyes and more suited to the style you're going for, although the bush looks like his hair a little ;D

Where did he ridicule it?
For visual purposes some graphic designers do go for the whole pixel look without perhaps understanding what pixel art is really about. I know that you guys hold 'faking' methods in extremely low regard; however, to someone with no former knowledge of pixel art that may not be so. Again I think you guys misunderstood each other just as he misunderstood this forum, but I just think that the reception was a little rude in telling him so.

I wasn't aware of that, and I agree that the way he responded may not have been the best way to do it, but I do think we should also take a bit of responsibility for not having tact. Aimsworth's post mentioned trolling and that implied that he wasn't being taken seriously.
From what I remember, his second post went something like "What would make it pixel art?"
His third post I think was where he misunderstood 1up to mean that we start at the pixel level instead of drawing the big picture first, and the pixel art style vs lifestyle thing he mentioned, I interpreted as, he misunderstood the intention of this forum as helping him to achieve a pixel 'look' rather than a pixel 'method.'
His fourth post he commented on 1up's rudeness, which I think was pretty fair given the way he was treated.
I think the reason why he was being so rude to you is because he thought you had read his comments before he deleted them and, as admin, you should have been more responsible, although you had not in fact read them and so perhaps that was another misunderstanding :(
I hope I'm not just being hung up over this incident, but he also PMed me and I kinda understand where he's coming from.
