Pixel Art / Tile a day - Mockup
« on: March 29, 2020, 08:04:29 pm »
I've been wanting to do more pixel art for a while, but I procrastinate a hell of a lot. I know I haven't got the time to sink into a large project right now, so I've decided to do a mini challenge for myself.

So here's the challenge.
-Make at least 1 tile a day.
-Keep it simple! ( I always try to go big and then never finish what I'm working on )
-Choose a colour palette as a base, but don't confine to its limitations, be flexible where needed.

The most important thing for me is to enjoy what I'm creating. So I've decided to make a small fantasy mockup of a house interior with 1 Character in it ( A bear  :) ).

Here's the colour pallet I chose: LOSPEC500
https://lospec.com/palette-list

Day 1

Here's a basic floor tile. Its comprised of 3 separate 16x16px tiles that in turn tile as a set. I don't think I'll make variations of this as I'm happy for the mock up to look like there is a noticeable pattern in places. So yeah, its just some really simple floor boards on top of a joist. Initially I was going to split the joist into segments, but that doesn't make sense, so its just one continuous long slab of wood.

Here's how it looks in the mockup so far. The dimensions of the mockup are subject change, I might make it vertically longer.

Kind of a wacky wood grain patten, but I kinda like it so I'm going to stick with it for now. Also I know the challenge is 1 tile a day, but I might find that I'm in the mood to do more, so I probably will make more than 1 tile on some days.

Always happy for any feedback btw.

Day 2

Got up bright and early to started on the wall today before I have start the day job. The wall is made up of 5 tiles for the pattern and 1 tile for the bottom of the wall.

And the mockup so far

It's not the best thing in the world, but it probably will change as I find my feet. Next I'll work on a door. I might even do that this evening.

Pixel Art / Mockup Remake
« on: July 16, 2016, 02:16:56 pm »
So I don't really have the time to commit to any long term projects at the moment, so instead, I thought it might be nice to revisit an old mockup I made back in 2011. I'm a bit rusty as I don't do much art at all and haven't done much for a long time, so we'll see how this goes. Please bare with me  ::)

I kinda want to use this thread to jot down my thoughts, inspirations, references and generally post any progress I make. So while I am looking for feedback, just know that initially I won't have anything to show, just thoughts. Anyway,

Here's the old Mockup

Looks pretty right?
I know there are a lot of issues here, but I don't think it looks terrible. So here are a few issues I know about because of previous comments and what I've learnt over the years. So, Priority issues, characters didn't read well enough, it wasn't obvious that the character could interact with things and the mockup didn't illustrate well enough what the characters objectives where. The last point being the most important, I mean it looks like a game, but what do you actually do? I just made things back then and threw them into an image without to much thought about anything other than what the game might to look like. And now I think it might be fun to revisit this with a new perspective.

I'm not sure where people usually start when making a game, probably concept art. I'm probably skip the concept art part and just use references for inspiration, which I will post as I go. And I 'll start specifically with the main character, because, well that seems fun and motivation drives me at the moment

Something to note, I'll be working at a higher resolution compared to the last mockup.

Here he is.

Gus
I won't talk about the characters objective, mainly because I have no idea what that is yet, but thats all part of the journey I guess.
Things I do know.
-He's from the past.
-He's a mechanic.
-Red and blue colour scheme (might change).

References so far:
Apparently if you search mechanic you'll find red and blue to be a very common colour scheme.

Trucker is probably more accurate in what type of clothing I want him to wear. Maybe.

This is the last red for the character

I think I'll start doing some art now :)

Edit:
Okay, first pass on the character done. Will look at it again in the morning.

Gus 1.52
I decided to keep him largely the same, keeping the trucker hat and white shirt, but changing the blue jeans for a mechanics overalls which are pulled down to his waist, also changed the read sneakers for black steel capped boots. Hopefully the overalls will add to making a more dynamic, interesting looking animation, and the heavy boots would also add more weight. I'm not going to put to much thought into it, because I'm likely to change this a lot  :)

Pixel Art / Superman WIP
« on: January 04, 2013, 09:57:16 pm »
My knowledge of anatomy isn't to great, I've done sketches on paper and done studies in the past, but haven't got it right yet. Still, I'm attempting to make a spite larger than I'm used to.

The one on the left is an alternative. Where I think the line of motion works better. But overall I think it looks a bit sloppy in places. I've also tried to remove single pixel noise as much as possible, so if there's something that stands out to much let me know.

Here's the reference. http://i.newsarama.com/images/JUSTICE-LEAGUE-15-variant.jpg

Pixel Art / Santa Sprite
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:40:40 pm »
I've decided that until I start work again in 2013, I'd try and do small sprites and random stuff. I'm still in a Christmas mood, so I made this Little Santa  :)

Anything look odd? If not, I might start working on tiles and turn this slowly into a mockup.

Pixel Art / [WIP ]Adventure Game mockup
« on: September 07, 2012, 11:30:02 pm »
I spent today before work making this mock up so far.Usually I'd always try to finish pixelart by myself without any critique, but it always feels like my work is unrefined in my eyes. I also make silly mistakes that other users in the pixel art community pick up on straight away, which can be a bit embarrassed and frustrating when I have to go back change the whole damn thing . So I've decided to go straight to the source to make sure I fix the mistakes early on and make sure I reach the potential I'm capable of. I hope you guys can help me develop this, and I look forward to your critique.

As it is, its very rough, I haven't added all the HUD yet, but I guess its best I get everything also looking good before I move on.

The idea is to make a few mockup screenshots in different screen resolutions, the tile sizes don't change, but the HUD moves to facilitate the change. With that, each resolution will allow for different amounts of tiles on screen at once.  The resolution I'm working with now would be the minimum, so I work from that and up. Basically showing fake cross platform testing. I hope that makes sense.

I'll add more to this in the next day or two, as I've not really fleshed out the full idea yet. But in reality if it were a game it would allow for multiple layers of parallax scrolling, weapons/object pick up, basic enemy's and a whole lot of other fun.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Dragon on a rock
« on: October 18, 2011, 10:16:32 am »
I did a quick sketch the other day and this morning decided to refine it until I had this.

But now I'm a bit stuck. I know there are a few problems, but I just can't see where. That and I'm not sure the rocks look right, so I left it slightly unfinished just in case you guys agree. Less work for me then I guess. Maybe I've just been looking at this for to long  :mean:
Any critique is welcome.

Pixel Art / Looking Down on the World!
« on: February 22, 2009, 06:41:47 pm »
A WIP!!! Well its been a while.
Looking Down on the world!
An idea inspired by a cartoon I watched on tv.(Tom and Jerry!!You've got to love the oldies!)
I got into it straight away but implemented a man instead of a cat..

Well its one of those work in progress that I'm not sure if anatomy wise I'm right. So some Feed back on that is deeply appreciated.

So what you think? Colours ok?
Also I AA'd onto a white background, so thats why there is a white background, it will be transparent on pixeljoint.

Looking forward to your comments.

« on: January 11, 2009, 12:48:45 am »
I'm joining the newly started Fad(if its new how can it be a fad? oh well) over at the Pixel Joint.

Old      :
Newest:
These are the basics, not much left to be done now. shoulders and down, and the face, which is something I battle with the most.

I want to finish this soon, as I need an avatar.

Pixel Art / [WIP]Untitled
« on: January 02, 2009, 11:48:07 pm »
Hey guys, I need your honest opinions on this. as I'm not sure what to do next(I can think of a few things to add, but I want this right first.)

I understand that the person in the piece is unfinished, this will have to wait though, as I'm more focused on the mini planet.
I'd also like to inform that this is one small bit of an idea I had(dream gave me the idea). So more will be built out wards and so on. So expect a bigger canvas later on.

Pixel Art / [WIP]Pirate Dump and some thoughts
« on: December 21, 2008, 05:52:32 pm »
Some of you might of seen that portrait I made for the challenge over at pixeljoint...It wasn't the best and I lost interest in it, but today I found some inspiration to use it in a mock up. I've decided to make this mockup to learn from the experience and for the fun of it. I've also decided that a small Story go with it.

So..
"A legend lives, where a pirate named Jimbard is more so feared than that skurvy bastard himself BLACKBEARD...

thats it for now:

Now for a few random things.

Pirate portrait:

This is now a platform to work from for the main character, called Jimbard

And to introduce the two characters of this mockup:
This is Dan: He's been made for the mockup.
=
And Jimbard:
=

I have set my self a colour limit of 16!!!! With all 16 in the actual portrait.

As far as the mock up goes, this is what I have so far:

And the animation.

Ok so. This mockup is based on Q&A adventure based game.
And so requires no run, jump or walk animation.
I also no that allot hasn't been defined yet, and is why I blobbed allot of it out, so no it won't be that ugly :hehe:
Oh I also want you to know that I'm working in 100x100 blocks, as this whole thing is 300x300. So yeah you can see in the third part of the animation that I started working in the bottom right block.

Now What you can do for me :)
-Above all things, what I need is encouragement.
-You can also talk about any of the above, whether it be the character or the pallet, or the mockup as a whole.
-I also like to see any edit or example of how to do something.
-I'd also like idea's, so if you think I should add anything that is kwl(barrels and lights and other things  ::) )...please tell me as I might add it.

Well back to work:
