I'm a newb, too, so I'll go ahead and ask: why ditch dithering on sprites?

General Discussion / Re: What got you into Pixel Art?

I'm a huge fan of old games, as are most people here, I assume. I enjoy old console RPGs, arcade fighters, DOS strategy games (Stardock is making a sequel to Master of Magic! Yeehaw!) and 16 bit action games. I really liked the art, as well as the gameplay. I thought the limitations of the early consoles and computers were kind of like iambic pentameter in poetry. It limits you, but the limitations in some paradoxical way free your imagination. I tried programming some with Game Maker and got pretty handy with GML, even making a nifty program that drew red and blue wireframes that pop out at you with 3D goggles (a crappy Starfox Clone.) I wanted to attract other coders to help me make my games, and thought that the best way would be by making really pretty screenshots. So I pixeled. I really like working with pixels, small tile based stuff in particular, so I think I'm stickin' with it. I don't do GML anymore (hard to find serious people to work with.) Maybe someday I'll be good enough to do some professional work on the side.

True, I should follow through, but I think this is a bit high res for someone of my experiance. Oh, and here's an update on my little mav man:

Would it be totally out of line for someone as new as me to comment? Oh well, here I go. I think the cliff needs less contrast. Its the only dark tone there and it stands out a bit much. I'd post an edit, but color selection is still a pretty weak area for me. Awesome work, by the way.

Thanks for the input. I'm here to improve and will try to implement as many suggestions as you guys are kind enough to offer. I saw the video demonstrations the other day, so I know what you are talking about. I'll keep it in mind on my next project.

Cool, it even matches the KOF style. Honestly, I've always prefered Capcom's looser, comic-ish style myself, but very nice.

Wow, thanks, Tisha! That looks great. I'll probably stop working on this. My friend wants me to make a Tamagotchi game featuring Dirk Nowitzki. Here's the begginings of his sprite. Really looks like him, I think. Again, I'm going to need to improve colors. Color selection is really a weak area for me. Also, his shoes need the outline taken away.

Well, then here's more oldies:

256 again. I used to cop out on color selecting, now I just suck at it.

This was going to be on a cell phone game called Chess Boxing. It was never made for obvious gameplay reasons.

RPG makers all want sprites. Here's some I made on the FF4 scale, but they are original. Dig the crappy grass. I have an animated version somewhere. His feelers twich from time to time and the blood on his hand drips.

And lastly, one I made for a competition on a Game Maker forum. It had to be made from a template of a little man and only use 16 colors. I don't recall if I won. Another guy was going to make a headcrab zombie, but I beat him to the punch.

Do the lips work? Also, I tried making a background... the dithering theme didn't work too well there. I really think I made him too big. I'll try to make my next picture a bit smaller. I'm not up to shadding something that large. He seems like he needs to have a cool texture or something, but that would take away his cartoonyness. Seriously, though, someone take that match before he hurts himself. Maybe I'm done, or maybe I'll just quit and work on something better.
