Critiquing your work always makes me feel uppity and precocious, but here we go.

Great edit,  Night, I hadn't even realized that bothered me before you pointed it out. The upper half of the arms is a bit narrow, and an individual would have to be really beefy to wear the suit at all.

This is very arguable, but I'd have have the left arm (our left) pointing more toward the viewer to open up the stance a bit. What's your context here? Are they chat box sprites? If so, there's nothing for him to be pointing the left arm at.

Massive improvement. Way to stick with it.

It bothers me that the gruff fellow's face is tilted a little. I don't know why. :blind:

That said, it's obvious you have skill as an artist, and not just pixel art. I look forward to your future work!

Yeah, I does get rather nasty zoomed in. Not totally sure what to do about it, I wanted to avoid using the same skin colors as the others, and I wanted the face to be backlit. Reads alright at it's intended size, though.  :blind:

I did indeed use a mirror, photos, etc., as references. The picture was more for the tophat and glasses. The likeness is enough that my sister thought it was a shopped photo; she doesn't really get pixel art.

Note: lost weight since then, hence the narrower face

This version follows the rules for the weekly over at PJ. Easily the most dithering I've ever used. May end up animating it, have the fire going with a few speculars twitching on my glasses and skin.

Anyway, there's plenty of time before the challenge is over, so tear it apart lads.

There's already a hue shift like that there. I'll push the darkest shade further purple and see what it looks like. Speculars where, the meat? I haven't settled on shading for his muscle lumps. I'm pretty happy with how the chewed up meat on his forearms turned out though.

I took both your suggestions into consideration, pushing the purple and greatly increasing contrast.

Changes:
  • dithering experiments
  • saws embiggened
  • dark colors saturated
  • refined shading
  • red-yellow ramp ---> purple-yellow
  • Palette/contrast tweaks, color balancing
  • saw experimenting

Alright, I've been staring at it so damn long there's no way I can make any objective headway on it for a few days. Could be finished? No idea at this point.

Next up Bellyache. The original design:

You might be surprised how far simple tools like that can get you. Just ballparking anyway.

How about:

Is that enough contrast, or more?

Pixel Art / Splatterhouse sprites *NEW* 10.1.14

I'm starting a little Splatterhouse tribute project. I love the game's aesthetic, but it badly needs an update. And no, the abortive 2010 reboot doesn't count.

I'm using a style reminiscent of 90's vs games. Might even make a few of them MUGEN characters to cut my animator's teeth.

Anyway, first up is Biggie Man WIP. If you've a strong foundation in anatomy this character will give you an aneurysm. Go ahead, count the biceps.  :hehe:

Lots of rendering and re-working will happen before I start (*gulp*) animating his idle animation.

Narrow her shoulders. As it is she has some hella beastly terus majors and trapezii. Trapeziuses. Whatever the plural of that word is.
