General Discussion / Re: What got you into Pixel Art?
« on: November 01, 2006, 11:09:08 pm »
I got into it because I wanted to make games too. I dabbled a bit with it Games Factory when I was a stupid little kid, and at that time I didn't even know it was pixelart, much less how to make the game actually work. I just enjoyed making some sort of ship... and then another... and then making one move while the other being controlled by me and shooting stuff at the other ship and playing it over, and over, and over... :P If I only used that time to learn a real programming language. Stupid me...
Anyway, after that it's been a little on and off, mainly doing different sets of stuff I dream about would come to life finally in some game, if I ever learnt how to program. I'm still doing that... And I STILL can't program anything more advanced than different incarnations of "Hello cruel world of games that don't program themselves" in about 3-4 different languages...

Nostalgia attack!  ;)

Mr. T and Leia are my favourites here, but lots of other good stuff here too.
Some few of them may need a bit more work (like the Beast, next to Link) but it's damn hard to get a good likeness when they are this small.

I'm gonna try to guess at some of those not guessed yet.
The guy to the right of the Grinch is Chuck Norris.
The one between Holmes and  Jafar is Abaraham Lincoln
The one between Helsing and Elvis is Duke Nukem (I'm surprised nobody go that one yet)
The one to left of Einstein is Bloodrayne.
The one left of Mr. T is Zorro.
And the one to the right of Indy is a protoss zealot.

There is a couple more I absolutely know I've seen somewhere before but I can't think of any names. My brain ain't working right. :P

Did a (very) quick edit on the colors. I didn't know if the bright part of the sky was supposed to be the moon, but that didn' make sense with the light on the rest of the pic so I made that darker too.
So basically you need a lot more contrast and saturation, if this isn't a foggy day or something. But then the stars would't be visible so I'm guessing this is a night scene.  :D
He might be leaning a bit backwards too, but I'm not quite sure...
Other than that, good job.  :y: As for a name, what about "Spazz the spacedog" ? :P

New version.

Added the other ear. It may still need some more work though.
I tried a different dithering style on the forehead now too. It may have turned out just noisy but I think it looks a bit better, and at least a bit more furry.
It keeps getting darker though, but that may be just good too as now it seems I went quite overboard with the highlights on the first version. :P
I don't know how I can add much more contrast to it now though. The colors go almost all the way from pure white to black at least on the central parts...

Thanks for the comments people, and especially your edit Mega10. It helped a lot, especially with the ear.  :y:

So here is a new version:

Changed the desaturated brown on the forehead with a lighter more saturated one. Tried to make the ear pop a bit more out by making the mane around it darker. I'll think I'm gonna make the other ear more visible too. It wasn't that visible on the ref so that's why I didn't draw it in here, but I think it would make more sense if it is there anyway. I also tried to make it a bit less flat by making the "beard" part of the mane darker on the left side. It looked awfully flat in the first version.

And you're right about this being jaggy as hell Mega10. I pretty much suck at aa so I guess this will be some good pratice. And by the great old ones, I need it! :P

I'm not sure if I want to keep the dithered stuff I made on the forehead though. I wanted it to be kind of textured but I don't think in that way. More in a furry way.

Hello everybody. I'm sort of new here. I was on here maybe a year ago or something, before everything crashed. And since the return I've been lurking around a bit.

Here's a lion I made. Dunno what more to do with it so I'm considering it sort of finished. 14 colors with the transparency counted.

And here is the reference I used.

No tracing. And I tried to stray a bit from it too... I don't want to become more dependent on references than I already am. :P

Enjoy... or crit the hell out of it if you want to.  ;D
