EDIT TIME

I think the middle line is disturbing your sense of shape. Look at the -> one, that's what I started out with, just trying to render him as well as possible.

The <- one is me adding detail, such as the overlapping part of his robe.

I like it, but try to be more radical with your next edit! Reeeaaallly think about where the lightsource is and at what angle it hits the objects, and you'll be able to render it better!

(edit is supposed to be super sloppy just to prove my point (: )

thank you Jad, your edit was godly and was very very very very very useful.

I took your edit into consideration, and started the shading again. is this one better?

i think it is, but i'd like other peoples opinions.

I think you've missed jad's point a bit, what he meant was that the volumes of the character shouldn't be effected by the line, the way your shading suggests that the line is a ditch in his belly, in reality the light would go right over the line (like in jad's edit) this suggests one large shape instead of two.

You're not thinking of the volume of the thing! That is why I made the gray bubble man, because it shows you how light would interact with the shapes he is composed of. I used the rudimentary shapes (spheres and cylinders) because that's all he really is, just with some variation. Try thinking of those shapes when you are putting the colors down. I am not going to make an edit because Jad has made a good one, and it demonstrates all these things well! Try making an animated gif that goes between your and Jad's edit, and you can see how he changed things. Then, figure out why, and then apply what you figure out.

Changed the lightest colours, so they don't stand out as much. I've also edited the hat tip thing so it looks more realistic. Still not sure if it's correct in the perspective.

anyway..

It does look nicer with pockets (#2) but i'm not seeing a lot of progression in this piece anymore, if i were you i'd call it done and start something fresh.

But a few things i can still see are the left(our left) arms shading doesn't follow the light source and the light patches on the chest are a bit random.
