Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Help with Dragon

It helps a lot to focus at the rough shape of things while constructing them.
I would suggest a triangle composition instead of a T.
It adds more stability to the creature, underlining its massiveness.

You should also put it on a surface by adding a shadow beneath it so we can tell if -for example- the tail is on the ground or not.

General Discussion / Re: How can I improve my pixeling speed?
« on: June 13, 2013, 07:47:05 pm »
Learn other workflows, experiment in different mediums.
It all translates to pixel art. Don't be shy to "break the rules".

Speed will come naturally with experience and routine.

If she's supposed to be climbing, her leg position seems to be very impractical for that.
I don't see when climbers would want to cross their legs in this manner.
At least I've never seen anyone climbing do that.

That dagger also doesn't look anything like a good climbing tool for solid rock.
This and the leg position as well as the monster head she holds onto suggest that she's fighting more than climbing.

Another thing, if you're climbing, you probably look into the direction you're climbing at to get a hold which, I suppose, would be upwards here.
The lady looks sideways with her eyes half closed.
A very relaxed look which, again, doesn't help conveying the climbing for which you'd expect a more focused look.

General Discussion / Re: Spriting on tablets
« on: November 04, 2012, 11:14:22 am »
Tablets make you work and especially sketch much faster but that's about it when it comes to pixel art.
Of course getting somewhere fast can be a motivation to keep it up instead of losing interest -I would know- but if you're used to the pace of a mouse, the results will be the same.
Once you're in the refining stage and deal with individual pixels, the speed advantage of tablets pretty much evaporates.

You will only get results you could never get with a mouse when doing normal cg art on a tablet.
That's where they truly shine.

Don't be fooled though, a tablet needs some time to even get used to and in the end of the day, the tools don't matter as much as what you do with them.

General Discussion / Re: What exactly is 8-bit?
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:26:57 am »
It probably means the same as for the 8-bit music kind: Looking/sounding like something from an old cosole..
I don't think it's oftenly used to accurately describe something on a technical level.

General Discussion / Re: Greyshifting

So grey-shifting is hue-shifting in which one color at some point is neutral?
That seems a bit overly specific to warrant its own term.

If plants vs zombies is sidescroll-y enough for you, that would be a tower defense game.
Starcraft is an isometric strategy game that has some tower defense games made for it though I am unsure why you limit yourself to such a niche genre here.
There is a multitude of uses for each perspective beyond tower defense games. The limit is your imagination.

@Ashbad

You should look into actual pony anatomy (not the cartoon kind).
You might come to a point at which you drew tons and tons of fanart but have no idea what a real horse actually looks like.
So I'd suggest studying the real, non-stylized version right along with the stylization so that you understand why the shapes are the way they are instead of just copying them if that kind of thing interests you.

I'm not spamming though.

You are double- and triple posting on a regular basis, i think that is what he meant.
This may be an off-topic thread but multiposting is usually frowned upon in any forum.

There would probably be no problem if you just edited your last post if you find yourself to be the last person that has replied and still want to share something new but I can only speak for myself.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Twily and the Firefly
« on: July 12, 2012, 09:57:25 am »

-Don't dither until you're done, it's a pain to edit that.
-Don't finish one part completely while leaving everything else rough (if it's even there yet), try working on everything simultaneously.
-This also goes for backgrounds and I suppose this piece calls for some sort of background. It doesn't need to be complicated, just something.
-Colors tend to interact with each other. Even skin is slightly reflective and will contain some green if surrounded by green. This is especially true when it comes to light sources.
