Pixel Art / Re: MORPG Character Template [WIP]

Thanks for the help Sherman, (sorry for the late response.) The colors I picked straight from the screencaps, so the whack color choices is Nick's fault. Just for making it work better I changed the swimsuit color scheme. Any other suggestions from folks?

I'm loving these sprites!!

Umm, minor question, doesn't Dorothy have red ruby slippers? Or is it different in the books?

I'd add more vertical rotation to the lions face, like his snout getting higher and almost level with his eyes or somethnig. Right now it's very straight on. I'd also add some detail to the tin man's arms. His legs have black points where his joints are, so maybe his arms could follow suit?

Also, where's Toto? (lol)

Already looking ten times awesomer!  ;D

As for water, your best bet is just to look at normal water and practice with that. Also check the way the shadows and ocean spray in the water are done in the thread linked to earlier, or experiment a bit and do your own thing.

Cool boat with an awesome sail. But yeah, it should be angled. Also I think the mast of the boat would be longer and further out of the water at an angle (it's sort of 90º to the center line at the bottom of the boat.)

Check out some of these longboats, the mast is curvier and has a masthead:

Longboat is long...

I agree with Larwick that the little monsters are both cute and awesome! But the right hands on some of them seem to be too far to the right. Judging from the angle it looks like they'd be more to the left.

I decided to go smaller on the sprites, then started the female sprite, then got distracted and turned her into Ty Lee from Avatar just to dick around. C&C?

EDIT: Lol, already made changes to her baggy... body... and stuff...

and some before and after shots (make me laugh )

Work on bust
Work on left arm?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Birthday Clown

It looks like the balloons are dithered, but the clown isn't?

Most of your problems seem to come from basic anatomy issues. The sign could be more realistic too, check out this tut: http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tutmini-wood.shtml

The hands are parallel with the camera, and so they look really flat. There's no real volume to the pants, the clown needs realistic shading, the position of his feet are off, the suspenders should contour to his body, his hair should be more random and less symmetrical, and the balloon strings need to be less randomly splayed and more realistically relax, ala gravity. Also use less basic/primary colors and mix it up with some desaturation.

Pixel Art / MORPG Character Template [WIP]
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:13:11 am »
Ok, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to do this thing:

I'm trying to make a character template for a MORPG I'm working on (no code done, want to get some basic graphics done and make a mock-up.) I want the game to be reminiscent of Mother 3 in style, but the sprites have to be big enough so players can see more details in the clothing they equip. I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and making the sprites smaller and offensively retro, but not until I feel that I should give up on the style I'm trying to do here.

Things I'm already noticing: Thickness of the face and contrast of the body.

Your biggest problem seems to be that you have strongly colored outlines around the blades of grass instead of letting them blend more. Plus they're all pretty flat and expanding from central points. Note how the blades of grass in SD3 are curved and blend together. And very few of them have highlights.
