Pixel Art / Re: Santa Sprite

It's pretty cool!
What first stands out to me though is that the feet are very small, maybe excessively so. Also, they're positioned in such a way that he looks a bit hunched over.

I'm guessing you want to stick with that sprite size, and the rest of the body is good enough that it'd be a shame to morph it to make room for bigger feet. Maybe it'll look alright if you just make them wider, adding some extra weight to the sprite in the process.

wat, mutual secret santas! Anyway, thanks a ton, Batzy! ;D

Mine got a little rushed, as I did a pretty dramatic overhaul during the last two hours. Sorry! Hopefully there's nothing too obviously wrong with it. :-[

Merry Christmas, everybody!

FINALLY getting some good progress on mine! I'm feeling it's a bit late. Good thing I'm such a bum and have nothing else to do for the rest of the week, anyway! 8)

Pixel Art / Re: 3 Combo Hammer Hit
« on: December 18, 2012, 04:27:30 pm »
I was hoping I wouldn't have to, since I'm not that great at animation! :P

Anyway, here's my attempt at an edit that shows what I was going for:

Were I any better I would've added more follow through at every point where there's a change in momentum. Especially before and after the upwards swing. Before, to string the moves together more tightly, and after because the movement stops there very suddenly currently. Also, I figure the character should have to use both hands to swing something that heavy around.

I think you could let the implied momentum influence the movement more. As the hammer slams down, instead of having the character stop it abruptly and then swing it in the opposite direction, have it follow through and continue its path behind the sprite as the character spins around with it. The hammer will then reach it's "back" position, from which the momentum is taken advantage of to swing it upwards quickly. A more natural movement like that might make it look/feel more satisfying.

For reference, I was thinking about Nightmares/Siegfrieds fighting style in the Soul Calibur games when I came up with this. He fights with a very cumbersome, heavy sword. The momentum it generates is used to string different attacks and "fighting stances" together, in a very fluent, satisfying way.

I can make an example animation if my explanation above wasn't clear.

2D & 3D / Re: Linocut

So, this is kind of like what Gustave Doré did a lot of? First time I opened up a book with Doré-illustrations I had never seen anything like it. I read that they were wood cuts, so I figured he would have carved a plate of wood and used different reliefs to vary the intensiveness of the impressions. It's the same here, but with linoleum?
- reading about it on wikipedia cleared it up for me  :)

I really like FrostPumpkins 4 colour prints, and Cures large prints are very impressive!

ot: couldn't there be a traditional art subsection on Pixelation, too? Even given the restrictions of the linocut, it doesn't seem equivalent with low-spec to me, given it's still a physical medium. This would fit in on the OT-Creativity thread, I guess, but with just one thread it's easy for subjects like this to get overshadowed and pass by unnoticed. Or would such a subsection count as deviating too much from this forums main focus? I realize these questions probably only can be answered by the admins, though. Excuse me for bringing it up here. :blind:

Anyway, I've got to try this, sometime!

You're welcome! Additionally, I was using the brushes downloadable from here (a lot better examples of more colorful art made in MS on that blog, aswell). You can make your own by using the select tools, somehow. I haven't tried, so I'm not sure how it works yet.

Messing around with Manga Studio today, and this is what came out of it. I was worried that it'd be unable to do other art than linework and simple coloring in. Turns out, it has pretty good brush functions, and it was easy enough to paint in a more traditional way.

Haphazard lighting and shading and not that much construction overall. I just drew whatever I felt like. I'm not going to finish it :P

It's just a test subject. But I thought it came out looking pretty funny, and I wanted to share it.

Just wait 'til the day before the deadline to make it. It's just like school!

Although, I could never really pull that off... Maybe best if I try and get finished as early as possible, m'kay? ::)
