[WIP] [C+C] Character face

on: August 12, 2015, 07:17:19 am
I have not really any experience with character profiles like this. this ones meant to popup next to some text in some shoot em up.

i was trying to keep it down to 5 palette entries, but I just couldn't get the eyes to look right, adding another shade made them look like eyes but they still look out of place.

( i have always been awful at characters and sprites, i am better at tile sets honest :p )

Thanks alot , that gif was super helpful for showing which areas you changed and help me figure out what needed improving.

this is what i have improved so far. a definite improvment

i should point out it was meant to be a short haired female pilot..

tried to make her  a little more feminine by tweaking the face shape and altering the hair

Edit: only just now realised she appears to be looking upwards XD

Nice improvement :) I think you should brighten the palette as well like PPD did in his edit. I can see what's what on my computer screen but on my phone I could barely make out the face at all because it was so dark.

Okay .. so here is the newest version.

i did try lightening the colours as suggested but it just didn't look right..
i want to wait until i have fleshed out more of the UI that this picture will sit in before i mess with the colours to much.. so i can getter idea of how they contrast

Didn't realize that.  :blind:
Thought it was a guy and went for more masculine.
Here's some ideas for a more feminine version.

I am really impressed by your talents PixelPiledriver. i have sat down for hours fiddling with details and i keep getting to a point where i cant see any thing to change, then i see one of your gifs and they show me which areas to look at. I have learnt alot the past couple of days

the progress of my version here

Well I made a little edit although you almost fixed everything I found weird ^^

This is my first edit and it was more fun than expected:

I hope you get the idea ^^

The mechanic looks good but the left eye is a bit unclear
the neck looks a bit out of place a well (not too sure about that one)

Had a few minutes, quick ideas for the 1st pilot

Basically took this one apart, redid the shadows/highlights, used less lines and more clusters.

EDIT: 2nd:

Same thing, more animu.

BTW when you come across a detail hurdle where you could end up with a lot of single pixel noise (like the eyes) cut it down to 2 or 3 colors and see how far you can go before adding more.
Try indexing similar thumbnail-sized images down to a few colors and referencing that. Usually more detail is omitted than you expect.

HTH.

made some improvements on the mechanic, tried to smooth out and rework some of the highlighting and i have played around with the eyes a little more.
also did some minor tweaks on the pilot, since pistachios version gave me some ideas,  but haven't spent much time on her

I like the changes on the pilot and mechanic but the yellow one doesn't look finished to me.
But you posted it so I should write something lol
The face looks good in my opinion but the hair doesn't look finished at all
also I think the shading on the right side of the face looks off

The anatomy of the green one is really bad in the jaw, particularly when contrasted with the other two.  It looks like you are trying to portray a male, yet you have its (his?) jaw narrower than the jaws of the women.  Men have wider jaws than women.  Men also have beards or some indication that they cut their beards off (stubble or at least a shadow).
