A problem I have with the shading is how all the shades are hugging the outlines. That doesn't help to denote forms. In my edit I just tried to push them past the outlines.

I think the reason the birdman is difficult to read is how close the beak is to touching the shoulder. It is one pixel away. This leads the mind to fill in the rest of the rather perfect circle of negative space so it looks like a man wearing a helmet with a visor like an astronaut rather than the white being negative space.

My suggestion would be to at least to move the head and neck over a few pixels so the beak is no longer in line to create a circle with the shoulder and there is a more easily readable silhouette.

I made this assuming it was supposed to be a teacup. The most important thing at this point is readability. It is very difficult at the moment to tell what it is supposed to be.

The scribbling features and the shading really throws off the teacup vibe. The shading suggests a fluffy texture, as Mathias suggested in thinking it was a sheep.

In my edit, I just tried to clean it up to make it readable.

I tried to make the shading on the sword look more organic rather than bands of color.

I think he should have less of an awkward stance without arms stuck out like that. And there seems to be a disconnect between the perspective of his face and shoes vs that of his torso and body.

Idk, this is how I would try to approach it, but I always have difficulties with colors and using outlines partly seems to help.

It's quite a difficult reference picture to use. If I were you, I would take several pictures of him and try to create a portrait that suits him rather than relying on duplicating one source image.

The problem with this one is the perspective from the way the picture was taken. His head seems to be leaning back and is smaller while his arms are forward and larger as they approach the camera.

First of all, your picture isn't considered pixel art just because you used some brushes/filters and have so many colors. Typically in pixel art each color is hand-picked. But, that's no big deal. Easy to fix; just draw over it with a pencil tool or opaque brush tool with no auto-aa.

*edited to change the host of the picture; it wasn't showing up on the forum

Bear in mind, I'm not artist and haven't studied lighting in any detail. But, it seems to me most of the object would be in shadow. It may have an outline of light that is coming around the sides. The leaves would be quite bright because they are translucent so the light can get through. Maybe through the ugly smudgy edit I made, you'll get a general idea of what I'm trying to convey.

Those are the best renditions of Castle of the Winds sprite I've seen. This is close to my heart; it is one of my favorite games. Great choice keeping the blue underwear.
I think some of the enemy sprites may have some readability issues particularly the snake silhouette.
Have you had experience inputting your own sprite with the in-built customization mechanism?, because I've never gotten that to work.

That picture still is of a grizzly bear, not a black bear.
