Yeah it felt way too strong, which is why I removed them. As for banding, it's probably my lack of experience speaking, sorry

Well I for example noticed that there is banding happening all over the place (especially the legs).
Not sure if this is important but I personally don't like it.

I'm not sure how relevant banding is with a high-res pixel art like that though  ??? Other than that I personally have no problem with the sketchy outline, some people may not like this kind of pixel art obviously, but it's done pretty well in this case (you could maybe add a bit of depths to the inner strokes though, but not a big deal to me).

I feel like Seiseki's ears are really doing the art justice. However, while I felt yours being oversaturated, I feel like Seiseki's red is a tad bit undersaturated. So with my edit I tried to find a nice middle ground  :)

Also I removed the "shininess" of the stockings since these are generally very matte, and the color of yours seem to indicate exactly that  ;)

I think the mouthpiece / respirator attachment of the helmet could be more present, like in a lighter color or something.

Yeah, I've been wondering if I should do that. I even tried a lighter metal color but it didn't fit ! I should probably try something a bit colorful, if only to add a bit more hue shifts because it could indeed use some presence  :(

So, just did a small edit ! Here's the result :

And a comp. just to have a better view at differences :

Edit : I did a small edit of the metal reflection on the barrel cause I wasn't happy with it, and I also edited the shape of the glass on the helmet, it can all be seen on the second image

Edit 2 : Updated the shadow on the grip under the barrel, can also be seen on the second image

Thanks - I'd like to make the centre black, that would also help the game flow from area to area (Metroid style) but I really struggle to make it blend well in the simplistic style I'm using.

Well as far as I've seen in 2D games, both modern and recents there are multiple options I can remember :
-Make a gradient : The problem with that is that if you go overboard with your gradient (too may tones) it won't look good with the limited palette of pixel art
-Make a border : Make a border just like the actual border you already have for the side around the edges
-Add detail and lessen it : Add just a little bit of texture to the brown, and you can go with less and less detail until the details fade to black, that's hard to actually explain, but it's mostly used for stone anyway

Also, I'd say that a black tile center shouldn't be black but really more greyish (probably dark pale blue).

Maybe some tiling experts will be able to determine which is better for your case ;)

Here, a solid ref on the helmet. There's no striping like you've got here, and it's got more of a chunky blocky look to it than a rounded one like you've drawn.
Good stuff though!

Yeah, wanted to modernize it a bit :S Although I've indeed gone a bit overboard ahah ! Will look into that and try to do some edits, thanks guys

Oh also, any advice as to how to make it look like an armor? I know it doesn't look like it but I've struggled to do anything in that vein, to no good unfortunately :( Which is why I ended up using a "flat" cloth.

Wow ! Well I do like the general feeling a lot. You have a pretty good basis to be an artist  IMHO. Personally I'd add more texture to the border of the tree, the solid patches of color on its border look a bit out of place. And also maybe add a bit of texture to the inside of the dirt and make it black altogether, depending on how you feel about it. However I do realize how hard texturing dirt correctly is, and can't do it myself at all so that's mostly an advice I couldn't apply myself eheh

Pixel Art / Low-res Doomguy
« on: March 07, 2016, 08:07:55 pm »
Hello guys,

So with a new Doom around the corner, I thought I'd try to do a low-res Doomguy based on Doom 1/2's hero. It is meant to mimic what it would be like if Doom was a 2D run'n'gun  ;) All feedback will be valuable and appreciated and since I'm not 100% happy with it, feel free once again to do edits of it to show me my mistakes (after all, isn't an image worth a thousand words, even more so for artists)

while you have improved the body of the genie, (nice job), I think you lost something from your original- a sense of action and dynamism.  Excitement!  Artistry!  A sense of being alive!  This was portrayed better through subtle cues such as the tornado esque smoke of your original, and the embers of the flames rising upwards.  I tried to reintroduce that sense of dynamism.  Don't be afraid to go bold, basically.  There are no limits.  This is an extremely rough and sketchy edit, but i hope it gets the point across.

btw you're 10 years old?? wow, keep up the hard work!  Do you have any knowledge of pixel based theory and techniques such as anti-aliasing and banding?

Woops, sorry, wrong tense, indeed, like said Gil, I was 10 when I started game design :) As for anti-aliasing I've read about it but I'm not always a fan of anti-aliased pixel arts  :-\ However I know I need some work with banding ! Btw thanks for adding back a couple of things I indeed think was lot in the process of re-editing :) And the purple smoke looks amazing  :o In the end it gets all your points across I think, don' worry.

Oh and to clear things up, I'm 23. And I started learning art and pixel art theories about 3 years ago and started more serious and intensive training some months ago. I'm working on a doomguy that I'll post later (I'm doing the doomguy cause I think it's an interesting choice for its colors and shapes). Should I post it in a new thread or keep this in a single thread for the moment?

So I did a small re-edit of your edit. I wanted to add back the slender look (it was important in the base design, yours looked great, I just absolutely wanted that slender look :P ). Re-did the smoke mostly to train (still have a hard time to grasp how to do smoke, if anyone with experience in that field could do an edit of exclusively the smoke, please be my guest, I would love that :) ). Finally I recolored the shirt to try some coloring technique with black shirt.
Once again seeking feedback with this re-edit, thanks in advance guys ^^ And thanks for your edit DracoDragon, it helped me a lot :)
