pixel art does not look good in line art most of the times. you use colors to build structure.

General Discussion / My variation on the color reduction technique
« on: September 16, 2016, 11:50:07 pm »
Hello, i have been making pixel art for a good few years. but i have also been using photoshop for a good deal longer and it has always been my greatest tool in creating pixel art. so i am going to show a technique i have been using with some of my latest pices that have gotten some notification.

*note some techniques i use can be found here as well http://danfessler.com/blog/hd-index-painting-in-photoshop

first i start with the base picture

then add filters to first restrict it to a color pallet and resize if needed. in photoshop this can be done with postorize and gradient map.

After this you want to add a ditter pattern and blend it with the picture. in photoshop you create a new layer put it to soft light / over lay and play around with the fill / Opacity

now you already have a pixel art looking picture. and this is what my first picture i made was no real edits just a little cleaning.

if you want to make this your own you will put the color restirction to 1 or 2 colors and work from that like so.

now you have a base to work on. and a good referral you can make something crazy like this.

remember to always have the original you worked on if you are showing it off and say that you used a color reduction technique.

You claimed to use a reference. This mean you used it as a reference, that is you drew an image based on it.
The "reference" isn't even your actual source for the colour reduction. You are implying you actually did some work to create the base image.

If you aren't being deceptive you'd best delete all your colour reductions from your Pixel Joint account then as you know that isn't allowed.

i am sorry but what? mind saying that to cure who have made many color reductions before?
here is an example http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/78167.htm

"First you make a painting, then you resize it and reduce the amount of colors, then you clean up." Granted he made the original as well but still a color reduction.

indeed it is color reduction for the base.
here are a few more referals for the ones i made on top.
the first one i made was the first i made in that style so i had little edits on it. not the same on the others.

also like i said in the first post i experiment with dithering to make structure. i never claimed to have made the 3d base i posted so i do not understand what this "fraud" is you claim i've made

also here is an animation i made with the same tec http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=21019.msg178257#msg178257 . where i say that i use filters for the dittering and shadows . i never tried to hide this fact.

Made an other Frontal one but with vertical lines this time " cheated a bit " only did half and copy pasted to get a full face.

*Edit used same referal.

and last one for a full set. no referal for this one.
not happy with this one . tried to make the same style but with less and less colors. first one is 8+t 2nd is 6+t last is 5 in total

Adding a few more i did. if a mod/admin could merg thees posts it would be good or it will be just pages of me bumbing my own thread.

would also appreciate any cc / comment what you dislike about this "style"

Thank you all for the great advice! I added more contrast and worked on the shading, i fixed the proportions, made the head smaller and added more SWOOSH!  ;D

What do you think now?
lacks depth try adding an outline "not black thou"

wolfenoctis's example is a fine one. outline in non highlighted areas

There are color ramp services, yes. I usually use this one here: http://www.pixelfor.me/crc/F0000032

As for color choices, old dirty bones tend to get stained more of a yellowish color, like here:

haha i use the same one.. but for skeletons you can go pretty crazy . White gray green yellow brown blue they all work.

Depending on the look of the game or project you are working on i would just add more contrast to the skeleton

some thing's . you need to use more contrast in your pictures or your picture will look bland. also when you pick colors dont just use a lighter color of the blue / green / red what ever you used. try adding other colors to it as well. a good tip is that you make the pice in black and white first then add the colors. you will better understand contrast if you do it like that. here is 2 examples . left one is your right one i just added a bit more contrast to it here is an other example . what you must think about as well is to add a light source and not pillow shade. right now the pice have no set light source and has shadows / lights all over the place.
