Help on a small piece

on: May 01, 2007, 03:55:22 am
Started working on this small piece, no direction really.
Anyways, I'm having problems thinking of how to pixel the 'individual' pages on the book, IE. like a stack of paper.

Any other critiques are welcome as well, it's pretty WIP, a bit I have to add to it yet.
So, just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to achieve the effect I'm looking for?

have you considered not doing anything? I think it looks fine without any details showing seperate pages.

I have, though I wasn't sure if just looked too plain and flat without pages showing.

I was thinking the same thing as Alex Hanson-White. The folds, letters, and the Quill on the book are enough details, it's pretty obvious that there are more pages. Plus, if you were to pixel the individual pages, it would seem like a rather small number compared to what could be imagined to be a fairly big book without those lines. I think it's probably the Quill that needs some detailing, but not the individual pages. In any case, I love how you did that page fold.

any plans for the wood?
i think the wood table would look nice with some soft swirls in it to help offset the plain pages of the book a little.

I was thinking of giving it a stained wood look, but I've never really been too good at that. I'll probably give it a try anyways.

Okay well I did a Lil' edit, not sure if I made it look bad.
Well anyway I put the "stack of paper" it was realy realy hard to make it look any beter then I did which is pretty bad.
Also did alittle with the pages themself tried to make them look less stiff. Probably failed horribly at that too lol.
Oh, did somthing with the feather I brightened the lightest color a tad bit.

Well, good luck with this piece I like it alot.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I worked on it a little.

1: Not sure I like it much, but this was mainly a little rough job of stained wood.
2: This is the edit where I added subtle pages at the spine of the book.
3: I kept the pages the same on this one, didn't try to detail them in at all.

in my opinion, i find the stained look to be so much more interesting to look at, and it also helps the book pop out a bit.  :y:

is this part of a bigger image, or is it just this? some reason it feels like it's part of something bigger, maybe its the edge of the table which gives me this feeling, its kinda of weird having a horizontal edge of the table along the bottom of the image, you could have the edge angled , maybe even have the corner of the book alittle over the edge..

Thanks, as for if it's a bigger piece, not really.
Kind of just an avatar of sorts, 64x64 is the max size. I do plan on adding a bottle of ink, though my attempts haven't been too well.
Smallish update:

I think the altered page shading featured in Atrophy's edit looks a lot more natural.
Otherwise, I think you've made quite an improvement on the original.
